Will say that, anecdotally, it felt to me that Goodwin's history of misogynistic comments cut through in Gorton and Denton too. I remember hearing that there was a surprising amount of anti Goodwin content coming from usually non political personal Instagram accounts of young women.

The fake plumber openly boasting about being sexist while his party was promising a nightmarishly misogynistic rollback on women's rights feels like an important part of the Makerfield result no one will talk about

Some vg on the ground reporting of Makerfield, which tended to find Burnham outpolling Labour significantly, and especially with women (as polls, before inaccurate reweighted, showed). Overall, national media had skewed perceptions/expectations. Not realising X is a distorting mirror key to that

Makerfield really looks like a story of the left (Greens, Lib Dems) consolidating behind Labour/Burnham. If he does become PM, the challenge is whether he can do that sufficiently in seats where Reform are less of a threat, and where he isn’t the candidate.

Some v. interesting patterns in our pre-2026 locals data e.g., the share of younger women saying they would vote Green appears considerably higher than the share reporting a Green vote in 2024. Lots more to dig into, but it's one of several changing dynamics on the left that we explore here 👇

When electoral reform was introduced, the Welsh Govt said that they wanted to change to a "proportional" system. But if we look at the Gallagher index (higher = disproportional), we can see this system wasn't really an improvement on any past Senedd election. Its better than FPTP, but what isnt!
