Beginnings for HAD Simone de Beauvoir once said beginnings are sheer acts of choice. Eliot believed the end and the beginning are all entangled. Anything that falls in-between is collateral. There must be a reason new beginnings are rarely gentle and often messy. Send me anything that explores why that might be the case. Think in terms of a fresh start, a clean slate, the beginning of a long journey, a reset, whether it be literal, metaphorical, or spiritual. Visiting my mom, who is preparing to move away from our hometown that I left 8 years ago. Today, I am writing in a Starbucks in said town that used to be a Blockbuster when I lived here. Time is weird.

Some days, writing sessions just involve writing. The last two days, they've involved google mapping the distances between settings to figure out how the characters go from point A to point B, and looking up exhibits in a museum I haven't yet visited.

Figured out that if I write ~1500 words/day for the rest of my summer vacation, I can finish the 2nd draft of my novel before I return to work. Today is the first day I actually hit that number. Why is 1500 so much more intimidating than 1000?!?

Spent two weeks at Craigardan in the Adirondacks at my first offical writing residency. I started the second draft of my current novel-in-progress & rewrote the first 60 pages! It was magical & I wish I could just spend the whole summer up there.
