The essay’s position, like so much else related to the joke of contemporary American governance, privatizes & individualizes elements essential to a free & democratic society, which used to be performed by (somewhat) reliable institutions

The number of dangers and the amount of work AI is already causing and will cause us is astounding. Yet we keep getting advice on how to make it work for us. FU if that is your advice.

There is a general confusion, in American legal theory, between the concepts of a "right" & a "freedom". A right entitles its holder to compel another party to do something or cease doing something. A freedom entitles its enjoyer to engage in a certain form of conduct, w/o interference from another.

People too young to remember but the day after Obergefell, the gays invaded our Churches and forced them to close, as they remain today. abcnews.com/Politics/thr...

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Respectfully, what this commentator misses is that much of romance is already algorithmic, even if it is human-generated. Any genre that puts "tropes" first reduces art creation to production and consumption. It is being scripted through you. In this way, JCO is identifying a likeness with AI.

What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!

Joyce Carol Oates
This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.

This is immensely wise. There is sometimes a rebuff of the premise that pain or trauma ought to be responded to with empathy. But people miss that compassion is not the same as agreement. If the goal is to help someone move forward, care is part of the process of correction.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour all of those impacted by residential schools and continue to advocate for decolonization, decriminalization and decarceration. This day serves as a reminder that the harm caused by residential schools is profound and persists in Canada. (1/4)

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. Today is a time to raise awareness of the ongoing impacts of residential schools and remember the children who never came home. How are you honouring the day?

Today, in Canada, is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Its watchword is that "Every Child Matters". It serves as a mandate toward inclusion, that ignoring the suffering of certain kinds of children & regarding them as less deserving of care & concern, is inexcusable & cannot be tolerated

This morning — following two investigations into Toronto mayoral candidate Brad Bradford's use of an app that rewards supporters for posting AI-generated comments and sharing contacts — Bradford called our reporting "inaccurate." We're now releasing the recording that proves our reporting.

Bradford calls CNO reporting of AI app rewards ‘inaccurate.’ Here’s the recording proving our reporting.

Canada’s National Observer has decided to publish the segment of the Zoom call that corroborates its reporting.
