This is about the cops. Most cops in Chicago are not running up overtime because there is valuable work to get done. They are running up overtime because they want to and no one will stop them from doing it. Hiring more cops would just make the problem worse

I avoid the term “gentrification” when talking about housing affordability because it mostly describes *how people feel* about neighborhood change, not the change itself. For example, this author talks about how containerized trash pickup will “gentrify” NYC’s streets by replacing parked cars:

While they reduced reports of rats, they are limited as a case study. Once enacted, the Empire Bins will destroy the character of neighborhoods. We will have fewer cars and more dumpsters.

I bring this up a lot with regard to why I hate "Share the Road" signs and would prefer "Bike May Use Full Lane" or "Drivers Give 4 Feet When Passing" type signs. Both of those reinforce the legal right of bicyclists to be on the road and in the case of the second, instruct drivers how to behave.

Also the fact that drivers assume, violently, that “share the road” signs mean that bike riders should “share” the road with cars (ie get out of the way) rather than the sign being directed at car drivers.

i was just talking yesterday (and it's not a particularly deep observation) about debatebros on here melting down over "mean girls" even when men give the same pushback this is that on a larger scale. lots of cis people also gave ken the same pushback, but it's a "transgender mob" no matter what

Rough estimate is that plumbing and electrical codes in Chicago that are not present in other large cities or even the inner prewar suburbs of Chicago have added about $50,000 - $75,000 to the commercial build-out costs for my bar.
