Elevation: Leveling the intersection creates a continuous sidewalk. Texture: Swapping asphalt for brick adds acoustic and visual friction. Constraint: Narrowing the lanes forces focus, while bollards introduce vertical visual friction. The design demands slow, safe behavior.

CDOT transformed this intersection with raised crossings, curb extensions, bollards and a much smaller space for cars. Slower turns. Shorter crossings. Better visibility. Safer by design.
Speed cameras are good. I’ve never got a ticket despite having to pass by them all the time. The simple trick is to not speed!

This happens within Chicago! Alderman have fiefdom over their streets. So richer areas that are progressive (good chunks of the N side) have great infrastructure, while the many other alders block it

Their streets are full of bikes, ebikes, scooters, golf carts, kids, and slow driving motorists. I attribute it completely to the street design and it pisses me off that we reserve it for the wealthy.
Would rather live in a tiny place in a great location than a giant house in a horrible location

Can’t wait for the new transit agency in the Chicago area to take over. Maybe they can fix the Ventra app. (And maybe Metra can actually take Ventra.) There’s a bug in the Ventra app where if a train is extremely late, it incorrectly shows up as having departed. Train 306 is late, not departed.

Bike lanes are for bikes. Not passing. Not “running inside for a second.” Every time you park in a bike lane, you put someone’s life at risk.
