I need to know how this works so I can fix it. Just about there. 🇺🇦 🇨🇦 🇲🇽

Seconded. It’s wrong on principle, it’s unamerican—we rejected religious tests for office and dual loyalty smears with JFK, Jewish Americans, more—and every minority (especially but not exclusively religious) should recognize it as yet another assertion that only white Christians are real Americans.

i really have no patience whatsoever for people who are scared of muslims having elected office

If you show up to Bluesky without following anyone, you'll be treated to a series of posts about art, music, and dogs. If you show up to X without following anyone, you'll be bombarded with right-wing conspiracies and white supremacist slop. It's weird which one is seen as a "political bubble"

Being able to use your phone or computer is all about the coders and their techbro overlords, NOT you. Here is a wonderful (tho very techy) story from a programmer for a UK utility who created a website for all their users, not just those with the latest tech.

It is not acceptable to bounce users on old browsers, users with bad network connections, users using assistive technologies. Certainly not from a monopoly public service. A lot of hype and noise is pressing us to extend the cowboy, wild-west phase of the software industry’s expansion. We should set that aside, and take ourselves seriously as a mature industry. Build a web application that works on a playstation portable on a 3G connection - if you do, it will work for all your users, and it will still work 30 years from now. There was a sad coda; as is the way of contract work, I moved on. I explained what I had built to my replacement, that it always worked even without javascript. He was appalled and said, “but that’s a lot more work for us.”

Given yesterday's convo about HTML as it went into the age of Dreamweaver, got this from a coworker and wish more dev work was done this way: mohkohn.co.uk/writing/html...

One of my most distinct memories of the pandemic was how quiet main avenues were (our apt overlooked Columbus Ave) except for the ambulances going by every few minutes - and too many headed for buildings in our neighborhood, including ours. Nobody wasn't scared! RFK Jr is a psychotic liar.

There were refrigerated trucks full of cadavers in the parking lot of one Weggman's. Unidentified bodies were being buried in stacks on Hart Island. The ambulance sirens never stopped. Health care workers risked everything and were worked to the bone. What was RFK doing during this time?

I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.

Reminder that one of the tenets of Conservatism is that assistance has to be earned. Which is pretty fucked up for the most part. @justinwolfers.bsky.social has been talking about the significance of non-monetary barriers affecting everything from free markets to govt safety nets. Good stuff.

Means-tested programs like SNAP are shaped not just by benefit levels, but by hassle. And hassle is regressive: it hits hardest when you lack a car, flexibility, cash, or time.⁣ ⁣ https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/how-snaps-new-rules-make-eligible

When you RT Trump's bullshit posts w/no filter, you help to make them go viral, you WILLINGLY confirm that he is the arbiter of truth, and you also drown out news reports on his abuse. He plays you all every single time.

DOJ just kicking the door wide open to people putting their hands in reflecting pools. This isn’t the America I grew up in.

The message from Republicans is clear. If you want to enrich yourself and your family, to break laws with impunity, to punish your enemies and jail your critics, then the federal government is the place to be. But if you want to help ordinary Americans and try to keep them safe, well, fuck you.
