History, London, and Beyond [All pictures my own unless cited]

A Wild Man for #WoodensDay See that his leg is gripped by a fierce claw. The rest of his attacker was lost when he was removed from a choir stall, as were his hands. No wonder he’s wild. Late C14.

A wild man carved in oak in the collection of the Museum Schnütgen. Late C14. Circle of the Parler workshop.

Mid-C14 lead font, St Peter, Parham, Sussex. Its thin circular bowl is decorated by lettering, with the inscription ‘IHS Nazar’ repeated vertically and horizontally, enclosing the arms of Andrew Peverel, knight of the shire in 1351, who presumably gave it. “Very rare”: Nairn/Pevsner #FontsOnFriday

Font at St Etheldreda’s church, in Ely Place, London. What date would you say the basin is? There’s a later font in the upper chapel itself. Perhaps this at the chapel door has been used as a stoup?

Ah, where is that? I've seen a similar one at St Peter's Harborne, in memory of Freda Strawbridge, seventeen-year-old pillion rider on a motorcycle killed with two others in a collision on the Wolverhampton Road in 1936.

"Charing Cross Station, July 1916 Casualties from Battle of Somme". J. H. Lobley. 1918. Over 1 million soldiers from all sides became casualties during the Battle of the #Somme, 1 July 1916 including those killed, wounded, or missing.

The first day alone saw over 57,000 British casualties, with 19,240 killed. In total, it's estimated that more than 300,000 soldiers died in the battle.

One of my favourite downpipes…not sure I had a particular thing for rainwater goods, until I saw this! 🤩 😂 One of the many excellent new(ish) interventions at Caernarfon Castle.

While the Post Office is busy closing its branches, here’s an example of some branches closing in on the Post Office. This postbox on Drayton Gardens, South Kensington is slowly being devoured by a London plane tree.
