For the folks following the AI side of things - is SpaceX/xAI doing anything notable in in the AI space, or would it be pretty much indistinguishable from a company running a top-of-the-line open model? I know that they made an offer for Cursor - is that maintaining marketshare given Claude Code?

I've been saying recently that AI "search" will eventually face a strong adversarial environment the way regular search does today, because gaming your appearance in the aggregation point of the information ecosystem is too valuable *not* to do.

Good thread illustrating how structural issues in LLMs (context fill-up and compression) can subvert an original prompt and induce the model to go off the rails. It's interesting that the original prompt is allowed to be lossily compressed, instead of being repeated verbatim in subsequent cycles.

Mfer could have had a fairly normal IPO with his one company that makes money (off lucrative & sketchy government contracts) but his entire fortune relies on a shell game: xAI (aka Grok) "acquired" X (aka the platform Grok is on) and was "acquired" in turn by SpaceX to hide their staggering losses.
This, but for software as experienced by kids who grew up to work on it.

I used to subscribe to the magazine and listen to the podcast, but they lost me as credible spokespeople for progressivism when @nathanjrobinson.bsky.social came out as anti-union when it came to his own publication's workers. It showed how much of the progressive schtick was just cosplaying.

For all the folks hating on the latest episode of "X-Men '97", I just want to say that it's been refreshing to what extent the writers have feinted in one direction with a story, only to ultimately go in a different direction, while keeping things true to the '90s theme. #XMen97
I wonder to what extent this is driven by past examples of tech figures operating in bad faith in communities. Mark Zuckerberg's attempt to displace Hawaiians and build a compound on the sly comes to mind. I'm not sure why anyone thinks tech companies deserve the benefit of the doubt.

They have staked out a purely reactionary position. Negotiation is useless. Just reject everything by default. They're playing this as Always Defect.

Dumb Chris Bug of the Day. Was on a call with a client and an "Add Participant" button wasn't working in a context of using Material Design for Web and jQuery to wire up some simple interactivity. Couldn't figure out WHY the click handler I attached wasn't firing, but others were...
This was probably when Apple was at its most fun for me as a customer. Regular Jobs keynotes, interesting new devices every year (e.g. AirPort Express), and a *thriving* independent software development scene.

You know, we kind of used to live in a world where people profited by making others happy, in some way. I totally missed it when we swapped over to having it be easier to profit off people by making them *angry*. I hope we can go back one day.
Managed to put in an order for this beauty before they went out of stock a few minutes later. Given its 1W TX power and its low noise amplifier, I think this will be the backbone of the outdoor node I'm building for @cobey.bsky.social. Plan to swap out the ESP32 with a Pi Zero and run openHop.

Finally got around to swapping out Amazon product APIs, given that the one I was using had been deprecated and started breaking my CI checks. On the plus side, I was able to turn back on the code that would translate Penguin Random House identifiers into Amazon links for trades and hardbacks.
