Around 1,000 volunteers have begun cleaning nurdles from 11 North East beaches, with the next few days critical to prevent the pollution spreading. The spill is one of the UK's largest ever - an estimated 25 tonnes (around 1 billion pellets) entering the sea after a ship collision at Port of Tyne.
