It was a true pleasure for me to have this conversation with Chenchen on her new book, which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. Also my first time working with Made in China Journal, which I’ve been reading for a long while, and that’s great experience too!

In 'Easting the West', @chenchenzhang.net stares into the abyss of digital reactionary discourse in China, showing how the Chinese right appropriates the language of postcoloniality to reproduce racial and civilisational hierarchies and justify exclusion. A conversation with @clydewang.bsky.social.

Americans are taught Kent State was a brutal aberration- scared untrained guardsmen who went too far and were checked by public outrage. But Kent State was one of many massacres of antiwar student protestors in May 1970 - UNM, Jackson State, the (non-military) Hard Hat Riot - all met with impunity.

I find it deeply grotesque seeing politicians mark this May 4 as Star Wars Day and not as the anniversary of Kent State. We are still living in Kent State's aftermath - the complexity of nonviolence, the impunity of state murder, the leadership of students in protest, the uncertainty of struggle.

Poster for the May 4th 1970 antiwar protests that led to the Kent State Massacre, reading "Dare to Struggle, Dare to Win! Strike May 4th"

LINDSEY GRAHAM: Our goal is to make sure Iran cannot become again the largest state sponsor of terrorism. WELKER: Does the the president have a plan to guarantee that happens? GRAHAM: No. It's not his job.

Bill Belichick is so great that I use him in my intro class as an example to illustrate what the concept of "modernism" entails. I don't like him and he was the reason why I'm not a Pats fan, but still... His exclusion does not challenge his legacy. It challenges the legitimacy of the HOF.

Media's norm of being "balanced" is always a myth. NYT used to report about lynching African Americans by saying that "on one hand" lynching is evil but "on the other hand" "Negroes are prone" to rape. When Ida Wells argued against that, NYT said she was a "slanderous and nasty-minded mulattress."

How have people watched these same outlets lie every single day about Gaza, about the videos we all can see, and yet expect it to be different with respect to their own situation? Why do you think they lied to begin with? Because that was the order that came down to them: protect the empire.

There are people who believe that atrocities will simply end after the next election. But if the "opposition" party continue to act cowardly like this, at next election there will be ICE agents patrolling the polling stations and preventing colored people from voting, if there is an election at all.

This is courage. Looking a masked, government fascist dead in the eye, face to face, knowing full well that your life is on the line. If elected officials had 1/10th of Alex Pretti's resolve, we would have far fewer troubles.

Alex Pretti "used to tell people off when they made sexist comments to female physicians. He bought me coffee when I had a really bad day as an intern...I laughed alongside him daily. He made a point to teach medical residents without judgement, but with a smile on his face and a joke."

One basic pattern here is that DHS officials are engaging in violence simply because they are irritated at citizens protesting them. There is no plausible threat of violence here. He just wants to inflict pain, and believes there will be no penalty for doing so.

Big clash this afternoon between DHS agents and protesters in a residential street in Minneapolis, following a DHS agent hitting another vehicle. Tear gas was deployed in people’s yards and agents pepper prayed people.
