My MS student just defended their MS thesis and is current looking for jobs. Their thesis included population genomics of an invasive forest pest and habitat suitability modeling. Skills included molecular techniques, some bioinformatics, & ArcGIS. If you know of any positions, please let me know!

Clearly tongue-in-cheek, but I am in favour of anything that increases jobs for entomologists...
For those facing a paywall, here's the piece. FYI, it dropped a word at the end. It is supposed to read: "He hates ticks."

As U.S.-Canada relations worsen, Michigan’s Sault area has lost an estimated $62.7M due to decreased crossings. It’s bewildering, a state senator says. He recalls Canadians helping locals fix the grid after a storm: “This is our best friend in the entire world.”
In the millions of years before fungus evolved to consume cellulose, all the trees that died and fell in the forest were backlog.

Regrettably, I have decided to decommission SimpleMappr, www.simplemappr.net on September 1, 2026. You may read about its origins, what others have accomplished in its 18 year run, and the reasons why I must turn it off in a document I wrote last night bit.ly/simplemappr.

"Is this jargon?" 🤔 We put together a simple decision tree to help think through when specialized language makes communication clearer, and when it gets in the way. Less about finding the "right" answer and more about thinking differently. Think we missed a branch? Comment below 👇 #SciComm

"Lorry" was a sucky word, New York Times. Still not as bad as "PSHAW" which ruined my streak because that's a really dumb "word".
Media call today and the reporter was asking if emerald ash borer-killed trees were linked to fires in Ontario's boreal.(no b/c not much ash in the boreal and EAB hasn't invaded there anyway) Apparently this is being asked online which is news to me so I dipped back over to X and sure enough.
It's so great to see growth instead of dismantling in journalism, and this is a great outfit full of smart, nice humans. Also, their newsroom in the Sault is the most appealing newsroom I have ever seen in my entire life. They have a speakeasy hidden in a bank vault in the basement!

When the Californians assure Canadians that we’re all friends and they are on our side, won’t we please buy their wine and come back to visit.
Was recently at an intl conference where I ran into some Americans I hadn’t seen in 2 yrs. When asked why I hadn’t been down and I told them I’m boycotting the states, they chuckled, made gentle remarks about how Trump’s Canada stance was silly. Americans have no idea how pissed off Canadians are.

There is clearly a link between climate and tick/lyme prevalence. It is important, however, to consider the rate of testing when interpreting this figure. The medical community until very recently did not consider lyme to be as prevelant in Canada so testing rates were lower. Test more, find more.
Since 2009, the per capita rate of Lyme disease has increased approximately 32-fold in Canada, according to calculations by Canada’s National Observer — making it one of Canada's clearest examples of a climate-related health problem. www.nationalobserver.com/2026/07/20/n...
