One final take: The people doing the hard yards of effective work, whether grassroots activism, legal work or lobbying, do not talk much on here about it. Because it’s difficult, exhausting interpretations are too bad faith, and the other side can see your posts. Bluesky is not the real world.

In any other disaster, you cleave to your people. Your family, your loved ones, your community. You come together, physically, and you have each other when all else is lost. Plagues/pandemics require the exact opposite, and it is uniquely traumatizing.

We also learned, the hard way, that the miracle of our telecom technology--unprecedented in our entire history of suffering plagues--still wasn't enough to recreate what we'd lost, offering only a very, very imperfect substitute (but adding a new vector for driving us all mad at scale).

Your community, your congregation, your loved ones, your own children, could kill you without meaning to. It's a shattering of the most basic bonds our species is built on. Every culture in every time period has experienced this horror with plagues of every description.

Out of all the cataclysms we suffer, pandemics alone deny us our most important coping mechanism: each other. To gather, to seek comfort in each other's company, becomes deadly--a vector of the disaster, rather than shelter from it. And yes, that very obviously fucks with you.

Pre-Covid, I always thought the 1918 flu memories were just overshadowed by WWI. But now, it’s clearly something about pandemics that just do things to collective memory. I don’t know whether this is unique to modernity but it‘s clear that humans react differently to this type of trauma.

UCU are not affiliated to the Labour Party (and therefore does not attend women’s conference) but if we were then we would be supporting this stance by our brilliant sister unions. Solidarity to them and the whole trans and non binary community.

one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon

to add: it is of course true that "just because some people in the ancient world were disgruntled with slavery / imperialism / gender based violence doesn't mean they were mad at these things for Your Reasons". but that's just more overlap between their world and ours! bsky.app/profile/oluf...

imo it's almost certainly false that people did not have critiques and concerns with sexual violence, slavery etc that at the very least substantively overlap with modern ones. whether or not they got to write epics revered and remembered by the leaders of the slave societies of the day es otra cosa

if the philosophy and oration that survived to the present day came from, say, Melos rather than Athens, I suspect everybody would be singing a different tune
