Word nerd @ Rice in Texas but currently at the National Science Foundation. Cogsci of written language, aphasia, disability. Definitely not speaking on behalf of the NSF! Only my views here…

A lovely reminder of how NSF funding may be tied to your science origin story whether you know it or not. For me (and this will date me) it was 3-2-1 Contact and Square One TV on an antenna TV with 3 fuzzy channels and a knob to change between them in rural Maine. Both brought to you by the NSF!

When I was in high school, my chemistry teacher (who was also my astronomy teacher) gave me a brochure for the 'Astro-Science Workshop'. She knew that I took her astronomy class because I liked it (and not to get out of taking physics like many other students) 1/n

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) will soon issue vacancy announcements that may be of particular interest to early-career scientists and engineers. The agency seeks to recruit early-career scientists and engineers in the roles of science assistant and science/engineering analyst.

A minor thing but also yet another damn thing: easily 90% of the articles I’ve seen about the National Science Board purge are illustrated with stock images of the building that NSF was forced to vacate so the HUD Secretary could have a better office gym www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/n...

‘This is bull——': National Science Foundation employees protest HUD's takeover

Dozens of National Science Foundation employees crowded the agency’s headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday to protest the news that the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, w...

The National Science Foundation sign on our Eisenhower Av building is now gone. The NSF mural in the foyer is removed and torn off in sheets. We were supposed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the agency in May 2025. That never happened.

NSF building on Eisenhower Av. HUD now owns. Destroying the NSF mural in the foyer. Of the Eisenhower building.

Starting a new chapter, and proud to see the continued impact of programs I helped build — like the first-ever Congressional Hill Day at APS. Designing & leading this initiative was one of the most meaningful parts of my role. When science meets policy with clarity and purpose, change is possible.

Scientists and graduate students press lawmakers to fight research #funding cuts. #SciencePolicy

If you know @ozgegurcanli.bsky.social , you know she’s a force of nature. With growing uncertainty in science, she brought psychological scientists from seven states to advocate on Capitol Hill. Proud to watch her lead this historic Hill Day at @psychscience.bsky.social with vision, grit, and heart.

Psychological scientists from seven states (AZ, GA, MA, PA, TN, TX,VA) are headed to the Capitol this morning to advocate for #NSF and #NIH funding. Very excited to lead this effort at the @psychscience.bsky.social under the supervision of Robert Gropp. With special thanks to @fabbs.org

"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging." Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council. I wrote about my decision in TIME. time.com/7285045/resi...

Why I’m Resigning from the NSF and Library of Congress

I cannot participate in systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging.

"Let’s be clear: It isn’t institutions that are being punished. It’s the researchers who are the future of science in this country — the ones who spend long hours at lab benches, running experiments, analyzing data." #SpeakOut #BrainDrain www.statnews.com/2025/05/07/u...

What am I supposed to say to this generation of young scientists?

Undermining the future of American science is not a path to accountability — it’s a path to decline.
