[shaking my head so people know I don't believe in a stagist conception of history] society has advanced beyond the need for accounts of fascism as if it were purely or primarily a superstructural phenomenon rather than an economic one

If you’ve never read or heard much about Western Sahara, this is a good place to start. I wrote in my recent book on the history of self-determination of western dismissal of the rights of the Sahrawi and the transnational solidarity campaign that emerged.
My episode with Sahrawi activist Mohamedsalem Werad, on Africa's last colony and American complicity in Moroccan occupation, is out now open.spotify.com/episode/4GcG...

the film is complicit in the legitimization and normalization of Moroccan occupation and half a century of settler colonialism, repression and expulsion of Sahrawi people, resource extraction, and colonial "development" — like the marketing of Dakhla, where Nolan filmed, as a vacation destination.
it's making me more than a little bit insane to see so many people talking about Emily Wilson's review while, with very few exceptions, conspicuously NOT mentioning the part where she talks about Nolan filming in Western Sahara, which has been illegally occupied by Morocco since 1975.

really Fun seeing in real time how many people simply can't be bothered to care about colonialism if it gets in the way of a movie. more than 50 years of occupation and still nobody cares. stop talking about Emily Wilson and start talking about the Sahrawi people's fight for independence.

calling the end of the Late Bronze Age a "collapse" requires accepting a basically racist stagist framing where centralized, highly stratified, urbanized societies are "more advanced" than decentralized, less stratified, non-urbanized ones.
as a rule, I think if I'm using the search function on a website for books — bookstore, library, review site like Storygraph — and I type a book title into the search bar, books with that title should show up first in the results. not random other books that have some of those words in their blurb.

btw, even if trans people chose to be trans, we would still be due respect and dignity like anyone else. changing sex is just another way we can express and hold autonomy over our bodies as human beings.

spinning off here: anyone know offhand of any secondary-world fantasy fiction that 1) includes some representation of cruising and 2) isn't erotica? (nothing against erotica, obviously. I'm just looking for things besides Return to Nevèrÿon that treat casual sex seriously/openly + drawing a blank.)
I recently completed a draft chapter in my current project that made me wonder: why doesn't queer criticism of fantasy literature/media engage more w/ queer cultures at large? W/ a few exceptions (you know who you are!), if fantasy criticism does engage w/ queer culture it's usually online fandom.
beyond my broad ambivalence about Butler's work perhaps my hottest Butler take is that you do need to read the Patternist books in publication order. it is actually extremely important for Mind of My Mind that you know where things end up, and for Wild Seed that you know where Doro and Anyanwu go.
