Everyone I know in Michigan can't stop talking about how racist and Islamophobic a lot of the Stevens ads were, and it's getting almost no attention nationally. Half my investment in El-Sayed's win by the end was that her strategy MUST lose. Incredibly sad and embarrassing.

This is also a big night for Muslim Americans. The U.S. has never had a Muslim senator. The post-9/11 country my generation grew up in has been plagued by rampant Islamophobia—some of that bled into this Michigan race. El-Sayed’s win tonight is a huge deal.

People forget that a significant chunk of Michigan’s Arab-Americans are in fact Christians, particularly Republican-voting ones. As in, white Christian Michiganders forget this. MI’s last GOP Senator Spence Abraham (unseated by Stabenow in 2000) was Arab-American even! Hard to imagine now.
