When I lament the loss of the Old Internet, or how Google used to actually work, or how freely we shared links, I forget that a lot of people actually never experienced that. AI slopification is recent, but the decline of the web started long ago, with Mark Zuckerberg leading the charge in the 2010s
Evan Simko-Bednarski@simko-bednarski.bsky.social · 3mo agoI don't think folks younger than 30 know what the internet once legitimately promised to be (and I would argue briefly was): a boundary-less space of pretty much uncommodified information and communication. A mix between community bulletin boards and university library stacks.
Thing is… most aren’t actually trying to “teach” anything. It’s purely for engagement and to show off that they know something. It’s all performative.

Han and Chewie loading their "reward" onto the Falcon in "Star Wars" (1977). I always wondered what was inside those unlabeled boxes, which allowed my imagination to run wild (fuel? money? maple syrup?). Never was there a need for the filmmakers to explicitly say what it was. The magic of movies.

My 10-year-old was showing me “protective pet“ videos. It was disheartening to see how much of it was AI slop but also promising in how well they were able to spot all the tells. “Why would there even be a camera there?” “Did you see the leash go through the table?”

Artists, I want you to hear this and embrace it: you're amazing. I love you and I want you to keep making art. Don't listen to anyone who tries to tell you it isn't as important and necessary as it is.

The majority of organizing happening in Minnesota isn’t just peaceful, it’s INVISIBLE. Moms showing up who won’t be interviewed on TV, people whose ICE patrols don’t turn into viral video. The grocery runs, the donations, the people filming bc they happen to be there. Please remember this.

Worth noting that one reason you’re benefitting so fully from the Star-Tribune’s timely, extensive coverage of unfolding events is that it’s a metro newspaper that hasn’t been systematically starved to further enrich shareholders and executives.
