One of the things I learn again and again being an artist in creative spaces is that it isn't about who has the best *ideas* or *ability*, it's all about who actually is able to pull through and make the thing. The introduction of fish to the Scandinavian mountains by hunter-fisher-gatherers 5000 BC | Antiquity | Cambridge Core

Deglaciation of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (c. 8000 BC) opened the mountainous areas of inland southern Norway for human habitation, but topographic barriers prevented the migration of fish into upland watercourses. Dates from four fish traps found in the exposed bed of Lake Tesse, within the central mountainous region of Norway, are reported here, with the earliest (at around 5000 BC) indicating that Mesolithic hunter-fisher-gatherers were exploiting fish that could have been present within the lake only through human-mediated introduction. These results help illuminate an early example of environmental management, and perhaps even a form of food production, among hunter-fisher-gatherers.

I am going through Bram Stoker’s earliest notes on DRACULA today - they include a list of the powers and features of the Count (then named “Wampyr” before Stoker stumbled on “Dracula”), many of which are never elucidated in the book…

• panters cannot pant hım; looks like someone else (38b) • insensitive to music (38b) • despises death and the dead (38b) . is affected only by relics that are older than he is (38b) • can create evil thoughts in others, banish good ones, and destroy will (38b) • cannot be photographed; photographs come out black or like a skeleton corpse (4, 38b) • can tell if bodies are dead or alive (4) • sees man semingly dead and says "no" (4) • has to be brought or carried over threshold. On the topic of goods from Fyrkat Grave 4, another item was a box brooch that had been used as a container for white lead, possibly used as a cosmetic/ointment There are artifact depictions of (poss) Freyja & volva with stripes on their cheeks, and I choose to correlate the two in Draugr #viking

A box brooch from Gotland which was repurposed to be a container for white lead, found in the probably volva grave in Fyrkat. It is ornately carved and gilded, with animal figures on the topGilded silver artifact which was found in Tisso, depicting a woman with elaborately coiled hair on the sides of her head, possibly stripes on her cheeks, and a dress. Some hold it to be the Norse goddess Freyja

Not a new obsession, but an old favorite: a duck footed charm found in a probable volva's grave at Fyrkat (Grave 4) There are a couple chapters about her in The Norse Sorceress, which is open access and excellent directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.50... #Viking #seidr #archaeology
