Antarctica isn’t one big tipping point. New research maps 18 separate ice basins, each with its own threshold. Some in West Antarctica may tip at just ~1–2C warming (i.e close to today’s levels). Cross the line, and you commit to m’s of sea-level rise over centuries www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Mapping tipping risks from Antarctic ice basins under global warming - Nature Climate Change

Climate change threatens the future of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Here the authors show that individual drainage basins have different thresholds and loss patterns, suggesting the need to consider the d...

🦠 Studying the biology and symbiotic relationships of holobionts living in extreme environments, such as the deep sea, is challenging. However, uncovering the strategies of these organisms to overcome harsh environmental constraints offers crucial insights into ecology and evolution of marine life.

New preprint! We explore how gutless marine worms and their bacterial symbionts use organosulfur compounds like DMSP and DMS - key molecules in marine sulfur cycling. Our results show that these compounds support carbon and energy metabolism in the Olavius algarvensis symbiosis.

My first dive into Raman microscopy! 🔬 Our latest heat stress experiments on Aiptasia raised more questions than answers — until a few days of Raman spectroscopy with Dr. Peter Mojzeš at @charlesuni.cuni.cz helped connect the dots. Grateful for the collaboration and excited about what’s ahead!

I just returned from my holiday in Finland. While we were looking for bears, wolves and co, one of my personal favorites were these green-alga bearing freshwater sponges. Photosymbiosis is everywhere if you look close enough. Maybe it‘s time for some freshwater work at @hifmb.de?

I will be hiring a PhD student and a postdoc for my ANR-funded project CECIL soon, starting in January 2026. If you have experience in (marine) microbiology and microbial OMICS, and are keen to understand how sea anemone microbiomes work, please reach out! 🧫 🧬 (p.s. we got tapas!) 👇

I am thrilled to announce that two exciting proposals were selected to be funded by the 2025 call for projects by the @agencerecherche.bsky.social – one major collaborative project (PRC) on which I will be co-investigator, and my Young Researcher (JCJC) project CECIL, which I will be leading.

🌊 The mid-latitude marine heatwaves now pushing 4–5°C above normal in many regions. This isn’t seasonal warming; it’s a climate alarm bell. Ecosystems are under stress.
