Hard to think the EMBO/EMBL symposium on the cellular mechanics of #symbiosis is already over @embl.org. Some personal scientific heroes in there, and a very unique collegial and open minded vibe (and great dancers💃🏻 ) #EESSymbiosis Wonderful way to reconnect with science after 🐣! #womeninscience

Welcome to Day 1 of #EESSymbiosis! ✨ 🔬🧫 From host cells to insects and marine unicellular eukaryotes, today’s discussions showcased innovative methods in symbiosis research. We’re excited to take you along on this journey as we explore the fascinating complexities of symbiotic function.

As emerging models gain traction during this uncertain funding landscape, the need for sustainable and scalable approaches is pressing. Our effort to implement accessible genetics in choanoflagellates and share our strategy is now out. We hope the community finds this helpful and invite feedback.

Are you curious about animal origins? Want to perturb their genetics to find out more? Now it's a lot cheaper: the FUNR @frutag33.bsky.social Lab's effort to make transfection more accessible for choanos (& relatives) is up now! 🧬

People working with #protists and #fungi might be interested to hear that we in this study sequenced 13.4 mio. eukaryotic rRNA operons from 450 representative samples. #ProtistsOnSky #Metabarcoding

This work shines because of @zjmaggiexu.bsky.social passion for these cells. She built it all—the cultures, transcriptomes, analyses, modeling and collaborations—from scratch. I can’t begin to express how brilliant and hard-working a scientist she is (and she's 👀 for postdocs!). So proud of her 🥲

Photographs of Zhejing "Maggie" Xu, an extraordinary gifted, hard-working, and brilliant grad student who is as comfortable at the bench or IDE as she is in the field. Truly an amazing individual whose passion for suctorian, protists, and cell biology more generally is in a class all its own

Wow! Remarkably complete story on the logic of phenotypic plasticity in a predatory protist - congrats @cellraiser.bsky.social et al!

How do cells adapt morphology to function? In a 🔥 preprint by @zjmaggiexu.bsky.social , with @dudinlab.bsky.social and @amyweeks.bsky.social , we identify a self-organizing single-cell morphology circuit that optimizes the feeding trap structure of the suctorian P. collini. 🧵 tinyurl.com/4k8nv926

We are looking for a PhD student to work on an exciting plastid endosymbiosis in microbial eukaryotes. This position involves sampling, exciting microscopy such as CARDFISH, ExM and FIBSEM, single-cell transcriptomics and more. #protistsonsky 1/2
