The thing about proposing guardrails for U.S. police agencies is that — as body cameras, civilian oversight boards, efforts to ban lethal holds, and more have shown — police don't really _do_ guardrails.

The idea that the GOP owns *any* issue must not only be reexamined but vigorously and constantly attacked. On every front they are wrong, corrupt, and often so weird and evil that ordinary voters literally don't believe pollsters when they're told point-blank about actual Republicans' policies.

Waldo Jaquith@waldo.net · 3h agoThree years ago, EPA proposed cybersecurity rules for municipal water systems. Republicans sued to prevent the rules from going into effect, and that was the end of that. Now seven states' water systems are under attack by Iran.

Quite an upset in the #KSGov Dem primary. State Sen. Cindy Holscher, who came out against data centers and the Kansas City Chiefs stadium deal, has defeated state Sen. Ethan Corson, who had a big financial edge and an endorsement from term-limited Gov. Laura Kelly.
It feels weird to have, atop my résumé, “I managed a president’s socials for most of a year,” _and_ to mostly abstain from social media — but, like, it’s not Luddism on my part. It’s a judgment call on the net value of those platforms to society, and my own mental health. They’ve come up short.

That isn’t how I would describe them. Unless you only mean the bad ones.
So much of the Peninsula should just look more like Brooklyn or near-the-shore Chicago — or even just Arlington, Va. The recalcitrance against even _that_ grade of density makes me wish it had to try Kowloon walled city on for size.

So. This "underlying health conditions" / "pre-existing health conditions" framing is understandably upsetting b/c amid the COVID public health emergency, it became a way of discounting the morbidity or mortality of chronically ill & disabled people. The people behind MAHA leveraged this framing.

We're going to need to pull back on sprawl that overextended the wildland-urban interface, build and subsidize housing for people who need to relocate, and tighten construction standards to mitigate fire risks. This will cost money, but the carcasses of fossil-fuel cos. should pay for some of it.

My take on COVID "lockdowns" (really, state and local decisions in the face of a killer plague) is that yes they were bad for children and this is an additional reason why it was morally repugnant when huge segments of the population refused to help with social distancing. Shame on you all.
