The best way to get quality in something you want to buy is to search foreign the thing you want with the "bifl" appended. This will usually take you to a reddit thread where someone has exhaustively tried every version of your thing and has a quality/cost matrix already

My take on boots discourse is that we face a lemons problem with many consumer goods, given the acquisition of many storied brands by companies aggressively milking accumulated brand equity for higher profits, such that price and reputation for durability does not reliably predict higher roi.

I do not care for the smol bean-ing of policy. A policy can be well intentioned but a bad idea because of the tradeoffs involved which is why assessing those tradeoffs is important. It's not bad to point that out.

Really seems like the more someone supports a full command economy, the more likely they are to pretend that scarcity is a liberal plot and that numbers are fake. Sorry no if you want the state to run stuff, the state has to really think hard about that stuff!!

One of my glowingly hottest takes is that kitchens are like lawns. What do you mean I need to manage a pantry and cook food for myself? That's gentry shit, and they have servants for it! I should go to the industrial food creation machine and eat food

I’ve actually wondered about food halls/public kitchens for years. Produce a couple staple items every day, sell in bulk. Theoretically it’s always more efficient to let someone else cook, but in the modern economy, the cheapest food is what you cook for yourself. Build places to flip that dynamic.
