I replay these games all the time, even though they always reuse the same gimmicks I’ve never seen another game get them quite right

Yeah, you rented it for like $4 if you didn’t want to buy it, and at worst if your parents did pony up that $80 you actually owned the game.

This is how most of End's Reach was visualized, I would open FL studio or LMMS and start writing ambient tracks, and then design scenarios and environments to match it! The end result looks nothing like my imagination though, because I suck ass.

Title seems meant to stir some shit. I do think it's fine to have this conversation though in an environment where mechanically dense games get called "friction" and intrinsic motivations are becoming hard to sell to players. That's even ignoring the VLT and slot machine things.

The road to an all-digital, zero ownership, no privacy, walled garden tech and media ecosystem is paved by people who keep prioritizing their convenience and being an ass to the folks who care otherwise. Seen it with computers, forums, phones, cars, now games. Can’t stop giving things up.
Does it play?@doesitplay.org · 3w agoOne more time: EVERYONE will be negatively impacted if we let Sony erase physical media. Not just physical buyers. Digital will get more expensive and you will have no form of ownership anymore. Physical going away doesn't mean the rest gains something. Quite the opposite!
Using realism and reference to expand your ideas or add weight to your world is awesome, and you can do it even without realistic visuals or presentation.
Veselekov@veselekov.bsky.social · 3w agoI hate that game designers feel pressured to make their games “realistic” or “accurate” to some notion that a loud annoying subsection of gamers will whine and complain if they don’t. Realism is a creative dead end.
