When people were building right on top of rock so your unit pegs won't stay securely in the ground, you improvise by using branches for setting up your unit strings 🏺
Our first full day on site and we've ceramics right on the surface! Sadly the maker's mark is missing from the plate, but the brand on the bowl tells us it was made by Zell Baden 🏺
The car is packed and we're off to a couple of weeks in the field to uncover some of Brother XII's visions for the world he wanted to build! 🏺
But in all seriousness, how many people will render maps of their pseudoarchaeological fantasies that other uncritical/unknowing people will take seriously? How far will those faked images spread? How will they inspire people to take action (e.g. Illegal digging? Damage to sites?) 🏺

'Anthropic described the project as “our effort to disruptively scan all the world’s books” in an internal memo, which noted “we do not want it to be known that we are pursuing this project”.'
No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

It's #AskAnArchaeologistDay 🏺! I'm running errands today as I continue to prep for my upcoming fieldwork, but when I can I'm happy to talk about the archaeology I do (see bio for details) on the south coast of BC, & I can help point you in the direction of fellow archaeologists in other subjects 😊
The Canadian Gov't has finally put out a survey to Canadians regarding AI, though it's about AI transparency and the vision they've set out in "Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All." The link to the survey is below:

The regulations that give teeth to the National Historic Preservation Act are about to get wiped out. "Section 106" is what requires pipelines and roads to get checked for impact on archaeology. It's also the basis for federal consultation with Tribes on projects. And it's getting DOGEd this week.
🚨ACHP is rushing a Section 106 vote THIS FRIDAY that will eliminate regulations, further devastating historical protections. Section 106 is what allows US to document our history in areas endangered by actions funded/permitted by our federal govt. Contact ACHP👇🏽 ASAP — vote NO! (cont.)
There's very little information so far, and these are confusing regulations. I'm an archaeologist and a lawyer, and I'm struggling to understand exactly what's being proposed. But it's clear they're trying to minimize archaeological review. Here are some details and calls to action.

🧵It's been a tough few days for #Archaeology and #HistoricPreservation in the US. ACHP released proposed regs changes to S106 on FRIDAY EVENING. They have betrayed all committments to an established timeline or collaboration with preservation partners. The proposed changes subordinate NHPA to NEPA;

Really fitting that the media organization that was going to publish a residential school denial film by a *literal Nazi* has handed a staff member over to the new BC Conservatives. The party focused on residential school graves to a creepy extent in the recent leadership election.

I do find it concerning that part of the justification for shrinking Bears Ears protected areas is that archaeological materials there have no "historic or scientific interest" because you can find that stuff (e.g. lithic scatters, petroglyphs, projectile points, etc.) anywhere. 🏺 1/
