Some lil City Hall labor news: The union representing city council staff (Council Alliance of Workers) voted this week to be represented by the Communications Workers of America instead of AFSCME.
CWA 7901 endorsed both of these candidates (Myrna Muñoz & John Wasielewski) as well as several others (Tammy Carpenter & David Osborn) who are ready to push past tepid, corporate centrism for a politics that improves the lives of workers.
Some Oregon Democrats get an unlikely primary foe: Their party’s top boosters
In a rarity, labor unions and advocacy groups are taking aim at two sitting Democratic lawmakers this year.

Gov. Kotek tried to destroy preschool for all on behalf of the rich and was defeated handily by parents, teachers, unions, and socialist electeds. Now she’s retreating by announcing some vague panel to study the issue. The working class is strong when we fight together for what we deserve. 💪
In a striking reversal from her rhetoric last year, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek today announced the convening of an expert panel to explore creating a statewide universal preschool program.
The Mayor did not respond to a letter from labor organizations and unions demanding he enforce the law against ICE.
Mayor, I hope you find some time to take a meeting with these labor leaders to hear them. It's important.
Over 50 unions and labor organizations have called on Wilson and District Attorney Vasquez to enforce the law against ICE and their landlord. Wilson’s suggestion that children, the elderly, & union members caused ICE to tear gas us is beyond the pale. PPB swore in court ICE used excessive force.
At the regular Council meeting this morning, during public comment, Tyler Fellini of @jwjpdx.bsky.social noted that the Mayor suggested that the 1/31 teargassing of Portlanders by the feds at the ICE Out Labor Rally was justified by the actions of a few. It was completely unjustified.
We… would prefer that our members’ bosses not be armed at the office…
After protesters interrupted a Portland council meeting Wednesday, one councilor is looking to loosen the city’s rules around carrying guns in City Hall.

Tear gas and whizbangs have been a familiar sight for people living near the Portland ICE facility. Recently, a projectile shot through an apartment window across the street, frightening a 70-year-old Yemeni woman inside who called her daughter crying, saying she "couldn't breathe."

Meg Ward, president of @cwa7901.bsky.social , said there are still concerns that the federal government could launch an operation in Oregon on a similar level to what’s occurring in Minnesota. She said the protest could be a training ground for how labor unions in Oregon respond.
We got gassed but we are not backing down. ABOLISH AND PROSECUTE ICE.
A big group stopped outside the ICE facility and federal agents dropped several rounds of chemical ammunitions. The crowd leaving the scene was the most chaotic I’ve ever seen it and the gas was the most intense. I don’t know how/why the gassing started.
Jan. 23, 2026 will be remembered as the beginning of the end for the ICE regime grasping the throat of the US working class. A coalition of unions - including our sister local CWA 7250 - in collaboration with community groups, has called for a general strike of no working, no shopping, & no school.
