Some lil City Hall labor news: The union representing city council staff (Council Alliance of Workers) voted this week to be represented by the Communications Workers of America instead of AFSCME.
CWA 7901 endorsed both of these candidates (Myrna Muñoz & John Wasielewski) as well as several others (Tammy Carpenter & David Osborn) who are ready to push past tepid, corporate centrism for a politics that improves the lives of workers.

The Mayor did not respond to a letter from labor organizations and unions demanding he enforce the law against ICE.

Over 50 unions and labor organizations have called on Wilson and District Attorney Vasquez to enforce the law against ICE and their landlord. Wilson’s suggestion that children, the elderly, & union members caused ICE to tear gas us is beyond the pale. PPB swore in court ICE used excessive force.
Mitch Green@councilorgreen.bsky.social · 5mo agoAt the regular Council meeting this morning, during public comment, Tyler Fellini of @jwjpdx.bsky.social noted that the Mayor suggested that the 1/31 teargassing of Portlanders by the feds at the ICE Out Labor Rally was justified by the actions of a few. It was completely unjustified.
We… would prefer that our members’ bosses not be armed at the office…

Tear gas and whizbangs have been a familiar sight for people living near the Portland ICE facility. Recently, a projectile shot through an apartment window across the street, frightening a 70-year-old Yemeni woman inside who called her daughter crying, saying she "couldn't breathe."

The incident is one of several accounts by neighbors who are upset with tear gas and other munitions being deployed in the neighborhood.

A large protest, dubbed “Labor Against ICE,” is expected to start near the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland on Saturday. At least 30 unions endorsed the protest and planned to attend in some fashion.

The crowd leaving the scene was the most chaotic I’ve ever seen it and the gas was the most intense. I don’t know how/why the gassing started.
Jan. 23, 2026 will be remembered as the beginning of the end for the ICE regime grasping the throat of the US working class. A coalition of unions - including our sister local CWA 7250 - in collaboration with community groups, has called for a general strike of no working, no shopping, & no school.
NEW: Portland Councilor Loretta Smith allegedly fired a staffer for union organizing. An unfair labor practice complaint, filed today, claims Smith showed increasingly hostile behavior to the worker following the union announcement, culminating in his termination last week.
