Portland councillors looking for clarity on whether or not to help bankroll an arena renovation demanded by the Trail Blazers probably didn’t find much as they took public comment Wednesday.

The measure would charge some large retailers and banks a fee equal to 2% of their gross retail profits made in Eugene.

The Moda Center debacle is especially interesting today. It highlights the realities of living in a world in need of unlimited climate resiliency investments as the wealthy escape paying for any of it. A recipe for losing stuff we love. It starts with the forests, but homes, food, sports all go too.

Trail Blazers "I don't think our public answers will be well-received." kind of says it all right there

Two representatives from the Carpenters spoke about the need to create construction jobs that have good pay and benefits.

Overall, Portlanders have been mostly split between support of the Moda renovation and opposition for any public funding going toward the project (similar to our polling results).

A member of Unite Here Local 8 talked about the disparity in pay and benefits for Levy Restaurants workers at Portland’5 venues vs Moda because of the lack of a union at Moda.

So grateful for all the Portlanders committed to old school "live tweeting" of city council meetings but especially today's Moda center agenda. On a plane, unreliable wifi, but grateful for all your updates!

To wit, we have been fighting hard to Save City Services in the budget and to center Workers Over Billionaires this May Day .. now it's.. finger crossed this deal trickles down to a worker- and community-led future Portland.

the testimony about how we need public money to go into private hands so then the private sector can give to philanthropic organizations / non-profits was actually the clearest explanation of the rot of neoliberalism I've ever heard. The government should just fund public services & employ people.

Kate Lieber telling people that the legislature didn't even consider the need for private investment is the clearest tell that the fix was in

the sports Oregon guy saying this is a "process none of us asked for" is pretty cynical. Actually, the corporate insiders absolutely wanted this process. They coordinated it during "Project Mt. Hood". They just thought it was going to get the hundreds of millions out without friction.

As of now we have received 138 pieces of written testimony. Of that 71 submissions are opposed to the term sheet, 46 in support, with 21 registering support with changes. Lot of nuance in the comments and I’m reading each them, along with verbal testimony.

We’re hearing testimony on the Moda term sheet today. I have filed an amendment that seeks to do two broad things: 1. empower the Joint Authority to limit expenditure public funds in the public interest with transparency and accountability 2. Reduce City’s commitment from $400M -> $120MM

I think Keith Wilson and leadership in the Oregon legislature screwed the Portland City Council by leading the Blazers to believe this was all a done deal without including *any* input from city councilors.

Seattle voters are currently approving the library levy renewal by nearly 72%.

Arenas and data centers use the same playbook: Pressure local governments to give them billions in subsidies and lower regulations over the threat of going elsewhere. We're told it's best to let them make as much money as humanly possible because scraps for a few here are better than nothing.

Would it shock you to find out that the private financing for this backroom tax break data center deal comes from a firm whose co-president now owns a part of the Blazers?

A ballot initiative that sought to direct 25 percent of Portland’s Clean Energy Fund toward hiring additional police officers failed to gather enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

Looks like Portland Police aren't going to be able to raid PCEF to hire more cops when they can't even hire for the positions they already have open.....sorry about your luck!
