Busy morning. Dropped my wife off at work, ran out to First Precinct for National Night Out supplies, stopped by the liquor store to pick up this Finnish Long Drink I've heard so much about. Currently shopping for a remote meat thermometer, because tomorrow I'm properly smoking a rack of ribs.

Very much enjoyed Noël Coward's 'Private Lives' at the Guthrie. Unfortunately, phones rang no fewer than eight times during the performance. Laura Odeh, my new hero, bowed her head and halted the performance until the ringing was managed. Twice.

#Minnesota enacted the country’s first broad ban on commercial access to AI nudification tools. Days before its August 1 effective date, Musk-owned X.AI sued, arguing that the law’s wording reaches beyond nonconsensual abuse and suppresses constitutionally protected image creation.

Elon Musk and his machine, xAI, are suing Minnesota for passing a law that bans nudification tech. The law forbids the use of public images to create sexualized content. And this oaf and his merry band of dipshits think their porn is more valuable than your identity. www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

Newsmax and Meta are collaborating on AI-generated news, as if the dead internet weren't bad enough. #Meta paid contractors to pose as teens and flood rival AI engines with alarming content. #Newsmax settled for $100M, for false election information. Two great tastes that taste great together.

It still disappoints me that bellwether (bell + male sheep) isn't cognate with belvedere (beautiful view). The v/w and th/d shifts seem spot-on to me. But probably one of them flows in the wrong direction, chronologically. But still. They almost hold the same meaning of someone with vision.

It's so funny when someone gets mad at you because you don't hate the same people they hate for the reasons they hate them, but even when you do they still don't like you very much.

I went to a "goth convention" today. I used to be goth, thought it might be fun to revisit it. It was just an alternative-market bazaar. Crystals, scented oils, wands, and so fucking many rings; all it was missing was elf-ears. Goth doesn't mean anything anymore. The kids have no idea.

Seven years ago, I preserved the seeds from Roma tomatoes. I planted them last week, watered them almost every day, and now they're sprouting.

A large planter of soil, with a wire plant scaffold. In the soil are several paired sets of tiny green leaves.

Holy crap, I just learned how to read Substack through an RSS feed rather than showing up and giving clicks to a platform that promotes Nazis. Now I can read all the articles I've been missing. You just get an RSS reader (Vivaldi has one built in), enter the URL and add /feed to the end. Goddamn.

I've lived in this apartment, this neighborhood, for ten years. I've never seen #NationalNightOut happen. I've been #grilling out front for months, meeting people. We've been talking, and I just got back from door-knocking to clear it with other neighbors. I think it's going to happen this year.

Missing my Bella. She was put down two years ago in June, cancer in her jaw. Lately she's been visiting. Rebecca felt her hop up on my side of the bed. I heard her push the office door open like she used to. I thought I saw her walk down the hall. I hope she's not holding herself back.

A gray-striped cat with deep green eyes curls up on my lap, staring up at me with intent. The long tail of a gray-striped cat is wrapped around my forearm in a hug.

Oh hello new followers/pals! I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Christiane or Xiane, and I write SFF stories and poetry. I'm known for having done a string of weird jobs and being a cheerleader for writers, especially indie/self-published ones. I talk about writing, art, BTS, other music... +

Even the grittiest blue collar city has a spark of magic under the surface. In Baltimore, you might find that magic around any street corner or darkened alley - if you know how to look. Learn more at www.christianeknight.com #Eleriannan #Fantasy #ISYK #CASOD #ATKOM 📚🪐

You know what would be a small but meaningful act of kindness you could do today? Leave a review for a book you recently read. Extra meaningful if you loved it, if it's an indie/self-pubbed author, there's only a few reviews in the review space of your choosing. It really does make a difference.

Love it when someone pulls out the worst example of a group and then asks if the rest of the group is doing okay. Never gets tired. Never gets old.
