obv we have no context for the fragment and it has a lot of echoes in later lyric but i do feel like sappho 147 is actually invoking and/or reworking epic tropes/language in a similar way to fr 1 and 16

I am VERY EXCITED to see the ad come out for post-doc positions associated with my Cambridge Lab for Ancient World Studies: please pass on to anyone who might be interested and works across ancient regions/languages/worlds... www.cam.ac.uk/jobs/researc...

much as the murder of Brianna Ghey mysteriously stopped being about the climate of transphobia in the UK and became about teen access to social media, the death of Jason Arday is, equally mysteriously, no longer about racism and is becoming about free speech in academia

i had a dream last night where i was playing cards against humanity with friends but all of the fill-in-the-blanks cards were either fragments of sappho or quotes from scholarship about sappho. and then i looked at the deck and it was called 'the intellectual expansion pack' or smth. damning.

Furious that Chris Nolan would disregard historical accuracy in adapting The Odyssey by making a "movie" with "cameras" instead of memorizing the entire story and then going on a nationwide tour to sing it to us while tripping on ergotized barley

the anime jaadugar: a witch in mongolia contains more information in the first two episodes about the transmission of ancient greek literature during the islamic golden age than i was taught in three years of my undergrad classics degree. go watch it

Hey #Classics folks! A former student asked me about this red-figure cup featuring a seated Dionysus and a dancing maenad wearing "satyr breeches." I can't think of other examples of women dressed as satyrs, so it seems super interesting! Anybody know of other examples (or scholarship I should rec)?

Attic red-figure stemless kylix cup, with interior depicting a seated Dionysus and (quoting the database description) "before him a dancing maenad, satyr (?). Maenad wears satyr breeches. Dionysos seated on klismos, himation loosely draped about legs. Garlanded with laurel, holds thyrsos in right hand. Surrounding border of stopped maeanders interspersed with dotted checker."

apparently hell maiden is gonna have more ancient poet characters for the full game release... i'm hoping for sappho and euripides but unsure if they'll only stick to people who appear in the divine comedy 👀
