I will remember Rod Liddle for the fact that the lawyer who checked my book before publication had no issue with me writing that Liddle couldn’t be a teacher because he’d have had sex with the students. Why? Because Liddle wrote it in a national magazine.

alex.crawfordsky Calls grow for the release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of a major Gaza hospital who has been held without charge and imprisoned by Israel since 2024. He is in immediate life-threatening danger, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel said Saturday, atter his lawyer reported a severe deterioration in his condition. According to his lawyer, Dr. Abu Safiya was brought to the visit handcuffed and shackled , bearing fresh injuries and bruises to his head, face, and neck. He was struggling to breathe and speak, appeared severely exhausted, and was on the verge of losing consciousness several times. He also reported being subjected to daily assaults, losing consciousness repeatedly, and being denied adequate medical treatment.
He told his lawyer: "This is the last time you will see me... They brought me here to kill me. I do not see myself leaving here alive. This is the end."
PHRI is calling for his immediate transfer from this unit, an independent urgent medical examination, and his immediate release along with all healthcare workers detained without charge or trial. According to the lawyer's affidavit, Dr. Abu Safiya arrived at the visit handcuffed and shackled, accompanied by masked prison guards. Fresh and severe injuries were visible on his head, around his eyes, on his ears, and on his neck, to the extent that his attorney had difficulty recognizing

I remain of the view that regulation of social media is better than a ban for young people. But I also pretty much agree with all these proposals.

Ban continuous scroll. Appears to one of the most addictive features with no downside in banning it.
Require a 20s delay before playing any video. Would make essentially no difference to watching TV episodes or films, but would effectively nuke short-form video.8
Require all platforms to have the default feed

as people you follow, in chronological order. Reduces algorithmic effects.
Any platform that uses an algorithm more complex than ‘people you follow in chronological order’ to be treated as a publisher, and held to account for content. As above, but more robustly.
Require users to use real names. Much of the worst content is produced by anons; it would also make it easier to hold people to account for things that are banned in real life, such as libel or incitement to violence.
Require all platforms to provide a suite of user tools. This might include hard blocks, ability to detag yourself or restrict ‘quote tweets’, and community notes.

and fwiw, the users are definitely the problem here, because in a way it's why they came here. to escape the constant, ugly drama of other sites and protect against that. but the platform itself is a problem. so much effort toward self-moderation has meant a culture of people talking to themselves.
