Music (Liz + the Baguettes, The Unswept), art, writing, running, occasional despair

So many small towns & cities have homeless camps most residents don’t know exist. Unless you’re involved via social services, nonprofit, maybe a church group, you may not not realize how many people are sleeping outdoors. Not in a big city; in yr pretty little town, yr tidy burb.

but the nice thing is that you don't have to be rich to do it like you can be the Dolly Parton of wherever you are just by supporting your local library or donating to nonprofits that serve trans kids or putting food in free fridges or wearing a mask when you fly

Reading Main Street (for whatever reason, I have never read much Sinclair Lewis) and was tooling along thinking it was just a tragicomedy of Midwestern manners, and then got to this banger of a speech. There are of course a few bits of dated language, but it’s as relevant now as it was 100 years ago

Excerpt of book: “I believe all of us want the same things—we’re all together, the industrial workers and the women and the Negro race and the Asiatic colonies, and even a few of the Respectables. It’s all the same revolt, in all the classes that have waited and taken advice. I think people want a more conscious life. We’re tired of drudging and sleeping and dying. We’re tired of seeing just a few people able to be individualists. We’re tired of always deferring hope till the next generation. We’re tired of hearing the politicians and priests and cautious reformers (and the husbands!) coax us, ‘Be calm! Be patient! Wait! We have the plan for a Utopia already made, just give us a bit more time and we’ll produce it; trust us; we’re wiser than you.’ For ten thousand years[excerpt continues] they’ve said that. We want our Utopia now—and we’re going to try our hands at it. All we want is—everything for all of us! For every housewife and every longshoreman and every Hindu nationalist and every teacher. We want everything. We shan’t get it. So we shan’t ever be content—“

Songtradr has fired all the engineers at Bandcamp and while they say they are focusing resources on that beloved platform, we don’t know what is going to happen. I am worried. Now is the time to support member-owned cooperative music distribution platforms like @Subvert.fm

What could you create/make by next summer to lessen suffering in some part of your world? Let that question be your guide and hold yourself to making something of whatever size and impact by that time. Hold yourself to the commitment. No one else needs to know but you will.

Good lord, Google. Who wrote this nonsense? They pivot directly from boldface “inaccurate information” to “for informational purposes only.” 1. We do this one thing badly. 2. That thing is our only job.

Screencap of an email in which Google has just informed iOS users that Gemini will now be thrust upon them, cautioning that it “may produce inaccurate information” and”should be used for informational purposes only”

Today’s weird and sad, and I guess it always will be now. Trying to honor Dad’s memory by: fixing something with Superglue making something that involves spatial reasoning and specialty tools reading hanging out with the cat exercising (this should be a run but it depends on the rain)

It’s important on Juneteenth to remain aware that we live in a country driven by various degrees of unjust human exploitation & our economy that we call American capitalism relies on legal loopholes that permit slavery & the threat of homelessness, which can be punished with enslavement, to function

A new Louisiana law could subject unhoused people to fines, jail time, or even unpaid labor if they are found sleeping outdoors. The National Homelessness Law Center says it is “one of the cruelest anti-homeless bills in the country.” https://bit.ly/4ed9gNN

tl,dr; Scientists no longer allowed to use federal funding to publish, attend meetings, or talk to the public. They cannot collaborate internationally. Grants can be cancelled for any reason, at any time, political appointees have a final say over what gets funded, and who gets funded.

Fun tip for catsitting: be sure you have the dates right, or else you may wind up wandering through your friend’s apartment while they’re still home and accidentally scaring the life out of them
