Indeed. In 1830, about half the Yale graduating class was summarily expelled for refusing to draw conic sections on blackboards in their exams. College students are sometimes a bit silly. "The college students are being silly again" is insufficient reason to capitulate to fascism.
"Some people getting annoying online or on campus" was never the national fucking emergency so many people seemed to think it was.
That said, I freely admit, the vast, vast, vast, vast majority of 'woke 1' excesses on college campuses were driven by white students or white academics.
It isn't a mass protest, but an example that springs to mind was Mary Rambaran-Olm leveraging the moment in 2022 to drive Sarah Bond off of classics Twitter (pre-Musk) over a bad faith overreaction to the LA Review of Books not printing MRO's frankly over-the-line review of The Bright Ages.
But also 'woke 1' involved a few suspect firings or brigading on campuses and a lot of self-censorship by academics (I was told to hide my politics by several different advisors). But, uh, right now MAGA is using the power of the *state* to censor and intimidate academics, WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY WORSE.

It also didn’t go too far in holding sex pests to account on college campuses
And which is more serious: 1) A silly campus protest 2) Someone said a mean thing Leftishly 3) Armed agents of the state murdering people 4) A political party using the state to silence dissent. (3) and (4) are very obviously a much bigger deal than (1) or (2), not that you can tell from the NYT.
But *also* it took political pressure to bring the men who murdered Breonna Taylor to any kind of justice. The man that shot Philando Castile got fired from the police, but walked a free man. An *infamous rapist* is president. Not woke enough!
I've been on a university campus continuously since 2004 and, uh, yeah, some of the 'woke' stuff on campuses got really silly. In some cases in ways that I think did negatively impact the climate of discourse on campuses and in academia.
FWIW, I think the question of "Did Woke 1 go to far?" it depends on where you ask! On college campuses? Sometimes. In making cops responsible for bad behavior? Obviously not! In holding sex pests and criminals to account? Clearly incomplete, look at the damn White House.
As a Portland mom, I delighted in reading “Wildwood” with my kids, which, like the crow trail, celebrates this city we love.
