Except for religious studies, the graduates of these "loan ineligible" majors are disproportionately women. Fans of this policy have probably never considered that social worker, cosmetician, teachers aide, etc might be low-paying jobs *because* women do them. newrepublic.com/post/213446/...

American romanticization of European vacation travel is not really relevant to public transit or to anything else.
Meanwhile, all the mayoral election challengers this year will be screaming “crime is out of control” incessantly.
Jared Rutecki@jaredrutecki.bsky.social · 2d agoThere were 37 homicides in the city last month, the lowest total for any such month dating back to at least 1970. That total is down 18% compared to July 2025, and is less than half the totals of July 2020 and 2021, which each saw more than 100 killings.
It's genuinely a massive problem that the median voter both 1) believes "criminal illegal immigrants" to be an astronomically more serious threat than they actually are, and 2) believes that the legal immigration process is substantially easier than it actually is.

People straight up both envision a system much milder than exists and cannot imagine a modern world without that imaginary system. By default they have no real grasp of reality on the matter, but are usu. sympathetic to individuals.
I’ve been writing a counter narrative of shutdowns that has me revisiting media from that time. And let me tell you, the only other option was everybody die. So yeah.

This paper shows that immigration enforcement can _increase_ crime. Undocumented immigrants already have the lowest crime rate, but tough-on-immigration policy makes immigrants less likely to report crime. So immigration enforcement worsens the problem it was ostensibly meant to solve

It’s not a panacea, but the fascists are getting 20-25% of the vote & aren’t dominating politics in multiparty systems. Also, Americans love to point to 🇮🇱 & 🇬🇧, which are two of the worst-designed parliamentary systems. Anyway, more & stronger parties are absolutely a bulwark against fascism.

My unvaccinated brother died of COVID in 2021. I was about a year and a half into my epidemiology career. Healthcare staff did absolutely everything they could but they cannot cure ignorance. They cannot cure an anti-science belief and culture. Thats YOUR responsibility. Not Dr. Fauci’s.

This story is so absurd that I think it didn’t get enough attention. Chicago police is violating the law to the tune of hundreds of thousands of secret traffic stops that it’s not reporting as the law requires. When Pascal discovered this, they said they’d fix it… but secrecy has only increased!

But now as CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling retires, the issue is worse— *half* of all stops in the last year were not properly documented
rather noticeable that Abdul el-Sayed, born in Michigan, went to college (undergrad) in Michigan, returned home when he was 30 to work in his state's public health system, apparently *doesn't* get to count as being a Michigander. For Reasons.
