Dan McDonough

Vagabond post-active parenting GenXer: DC/Providence/Philly/Wherever. Into bikes, indie rock, contemporary art, fine dining. Good cook, bad musician. Hates all of this.

I love when you spend thirty minutes chatting with someone in Hyderabad about a problem with, say, an airline reservation, and they can't fix it, and then they ask, "Is there anything else I can help you with?" Dude you haven't helped me with the first thing yet, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Can I bitch, just a little bit? The D in my last name is capitalized. McDonough. And everywhere I turn these days, automated systems are just dropping that and outputting "Mcdonough." Hate it, hate it, hate it. This isn't even that hard.

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

If I've learned anything from the last decade, it's that political prognostication in the United States is a fool's errand. That said, I'm prognosticating that JD Vance is never going to be President.

@rikiwilchins.bsky.social 2026 Jul Advocate Possibly previewing his upcoming presidential campaign themes, JD Vance urges the DOJ to investigate [fictive] allegations that US hospitals are "using misleading or even fraudulent diagnostic and billing codes" to bill insurers for pediatric care.

The core issue with the Guard being in DC is that there is no justifiable reason for their presence. Their deployment here is senseless and an affront to District autonomy and democracy. Any critical examination of their deployment that doesn’t begin with this premise is going to be flawed.

The fact that this is published in a low-readership, intellectual, lefty magazine instead of on the front page of the New York Times says a WHOLE lot about how we got here.
