Last week the Guardian published an open letter from some of the UK’s foremost Russia-excusers, attacking Fiona Hill and accusing the defence review she copiloted of “warmongering“ for recommending preparations to defend against Russia. Today, a reply. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

There is only one warmonger on the European stage: Vladimir Putin | Letter

Letter: Experts on Russia, Ukraine and international security respond to a letter that criticised Fiona Hill for her assessment of the Russian threat to Britain

we shouldn't be altering our behaviour as democratic citizens. I expect freedom of speech and the rule of law and won't adjust to creeping US autocratization by self-censoring. We should be exposing and confronting autocratization in whichever form we encounter it.

This is bonkers, of course, but the point on threat to Europe does deserve clarification. Every time I present my book on Russia's centuries-long obsession with controlling Ukraine, there would be someone in the audience, often a Balt or a Pole, who would ask: So it is just about Ukraine only, then?

Witkoff on Ukraine: "There's a view within the country of Russia that these are Russian territories, that there are referendums within these territories that justify these actions ... I just don't see that [Putin] wants to take all of Europe ... I take him as his word."

Some thoughts from Brussels. Europe is awoken and believes America is all but gone. As such huge efforts on defense funding from EU, Germany, and others. This is real. BUT... Europe is still not reckoning yet with its major structural security problem: No one does European defense. 1/

The US is starting to resemble the Global South where majorities recognize Pu's russia as the aggressor, hate Putin, and support Ukraine but their governments play geopolitical games that make them minimize or ignore Russia's illegal war. Don't be fooled, the world knows Russia is the aggressor.

The question of sending European troops to Ukraine is the only one that really matters today. It is the only guarantee that can credibly prevent a new 🇷🇺 aggression in the future and firmly anchor 🇺🇦 to 🇪🇺.

I’m in Munich and people keep asking me to decode Vance’s speech. OK: In Vance English “free speech” means “Let Musk run your elections” and “democracy” means “let Russia run your elections.” Now move on. 2025 is about what Europeans do, not what Americans say.

While Trump threatens to invade Canada and his MAGA movement bullies and harasses Canadians and other US allies, Canadians are busy saving USians from burning alive. Canadian air crews in Los Angeles risked their lives to save US civilians. #palisadesfire

When fascism became a dominant political force across much of the West in the 1930s, it was a populist movement but also popular, enjoying support from all major sectors of society. The (first of many) horror(s) for those who opposed it was watching their friends and neighbors succumb to its poison.
