“What would Putin like us to do?” doesn’t seem the best guideline for US policy. But this announcement will make it harder for Europe to keep living in a state of denial: as long as Trump is in power (and probably beyond) it can’t rely on the US to help in a crisis.

The U.S. is "significantly scaling down" its conventional military commitments to NATO. The nuclear umbrella stays, but Washington will "shrink" military capabilities available in a "major crisis, such as a military attack on a NATO member." An announcement is expected in Brussels on Friday.
