When we don't adequately fund public universities, and instead force students to take out loans, what we as a society are really doing is borrowing money from the younger generation—their hard-earned future income—to fund a necessary project that benefits us all: building an educated society.

1. This is bullsh*t & an epically stupid policy completely detached from any empirical evidence: bsky.app/profile/mcop... 2. We could simply avoid this entire issue by <all together now> Funding. The. Damn. Public. Universities. Like. We. Used. To: bsky.app/profile/mcop...

The family court system also makes it *harder* for women who accuse their husbands of abuse to protect their children, penalizing mothers who don't come across as cooperative. Criminal accusations increase this risk. Fathers with restraining orders are statistically *more* likely to gain custody.

Slow clap and mad respect to all the local journalists in Spokane who have been covering this nonstop over the past 30+ hours, delivering updates to people desperate for them while also feeling heartbreak for family, friends, neighbors, and in some cases preparing to evacuate themselves. Thank you.

Here’s the thing that frightens me. Everyone executed their roles almost perfectly in the response to these fires and it was still this bad. Everyone. Responders, city, county and fed officials. Detection and warning systems. Everyone did their jobs very well. This was a best case outcome.

The front page of this morning’s Spokesman-Review, Aug. 2, 2026, the day after one of the worst wildfires in Washington state history. More than 600 structures, mostly homes, have been lost in the #OldTrailsFire. Read local news.

Three years ago, our reporter received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of thousands of files: years of secretly recorded conversations, private militia chat logs and videos sent by a man named John Williams. (Published Jan. 2025)

A 58-year-old letter carrier collapsed & died on his mail route in triple-digit heat. He's the third DFW letter carrier to die since 2023. Yet House Republicans JUST advanced a bill to block the federal heat rule. Working shouldn't be a death sentence.

Despite high-profile deaths, ‘nothing has changed’ for USPS carriers working in heat

Great news; yet another court finds that ICE and the DOJ were wrong to declare that Congress secretly mandated detention of millions of noncitizens in 1996 (specifically, anyone who entered unlawfully at some point in the past, no matter how long ago), and that no one had noticed until now.

9th Cir., 2-1, joins the 2d, 6th, 10th, and 11th Cirs. in holding that DHS cannot detain unadmitted noncitizens found living inside the United States without the possibility of bond while their removal proceedings are pending. Circuits split with 5th and 8th. cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/op...

In this case, we conclude that § 1225(b)(2)(A), based on its text and context, is best construed as applying to aliens entering the United States at the border. Section 1226, by contrast, is best understood as governing inadmissible and deportable aliens present in the interior of the United States. While the relevant statutory provisions are not pellucidly clear, the text, context, and history of the INA are more supportive of the plaintiffs’ interpretation.
