Harry Kane scored 6 goals for England in the World Cup. After he admitted he went golfing with Donald Trump he did not score again the rest of the tournament, and England are out. The Trump sports curse remains undefeated.
the Driveby Calligrapher
@dbcalligrapher.bsky.social
She/Her. find me at cons & signings, usually near Boston. name - I was at an N. K. Jemisin signing and I did a piece of calligraphy for her, she said something like “wow, drive by calligraphy”, I asked if I could use that as a moniker.
Headed out!!!! Lovely to see people. Readercon is my favorite.
On a panel about books that include black WWII soldiers we have @pdjeliclark.bsky.social, demurring.
I hate it when one panelist starts talking over the other ones :/
@swingingstorm.bsky.social with a staggering and never before highlighted fact: english imperialists LOVED stealing shit. (Tea, in this instance)
@gillianlynndaniels.bsky.social with a call to action. Working all day every day is tiring intentionally. Talk to your your neighbors before they fall down the Fox News rabbit hole. Hope is not enough of you don’t participate to the fullest extent of your abilities.
counterpoint: the dead should make it harder for me to speak ill of them
@djolder.bsky.social again, telling people to let go of the “he was just a man of his time” narrative.
@djolder.bsky.social talking about the crucial power of storytelling, and how important it is to look at what you’ve written and the context of the world before putting it out there.
@marissalingen.bsky.social highlighting that not every book can inspire a sea change individually, and that cannot be the goal of every book
In honor of the line that @readercon.org attendees have probably heard the most this weekend…. #readercon
ALL the cool people are wearing them.
My very long #Readercon day of programming is at an end, and I am still absolutely delighted by the lovely work of @dbcalligrapher.bsky.social, who transcribed quotes from my presentation on The Saga of Blood Marmalade IN THE PRETTIEST POSSIBLE MANNER
I’m sleepy tired and going home for dinner, but I’ll be around in the morning for a few hours!
I’m just on a @sachalamb.bsky.social kick but I promise the other panelists are also cool. Here they are talking about Peter Pan.
This is so sad I forgot to post it, but I promise @pdjeliclark.bsky.social said something REALLY funny at his interview and I wrote it down and gave it to him. Also every interview should be done by Rob Cameron, he’s so freakin good at it.
@authorlevai.bsky.social dropping another great one liner at the cannibalism panel, this time boiling down the myth of Saturn and Zeus
At the horror in horrifying times panel, @swingingstorm.bsky.social is talking about her book - and about how writing horror set in the real world is inextricably tied to what’s happening to real people. when I finished it (at 1 am) I sent her a photo of me fully sobbing
@katherinecrighton.bsky.social talking about following medieval and early modern recipes, and how not quite understanding the written instructions adds a layer of verisimilitude to the process.
@katherinecrighton.bsky.social is giving us great tips about research. Check your sources, kids. Then check your sources’ sources.
I fear I was too locked in during the Lois, Megan, Tammy panel to write down any quotes but I DID take a full notebook page of notes.
In that same vein, jessica levai talking about how knights are often depicted as purely defensive…. But how that doesn’t last
@rebeccafraimow.bsky.social echoing what @alixeharrow.bsky.social said at the book tour for the everlasting- our love for the fantasy knight has to recognize that knights did suck
Talking about sports in speculative fiction, @englelaird.bsky.social noted that his rule is that the amount of finicky detail you can include should be directly proportionate to how much the reader is supposed to care about the sport in the storyline.
But the biggest difference between a machine and a person is *moral consideration*. A person deserves and demands moral consideration: for their wellbeing, their feelings, even their bladders. A machine gets none of this: you can curse it, kick it, snap out orders without please or thank you. 12/
Terry pratchett Tamora pierce Seaman McGuire Brandon Sanderson Diana Wynne jones K. J. Charles (got addicted last summer and read 30 books in a month) Rick riordan Garth nix Various and sundry children’s authors @thestorygraph.com made this easy to check, haha
I might be in the minority but I don’t think there’s any author I’ve read 20 books by. Other than Dr. Seuss. I know many folks who discover an author and then get every book they ever wrote, but I don’t tend to do that. Oh wait, Patrick O’Brien, bc the Aubrey/Maturin series is 20 books!
