Currently teaching, reading, and writing, in that order. I enjoy looking at old boats.

Playing Titanfall 2 again and it just fills you with sadness, that specific strain of narrative first person shooter that Half-life wrought basically does not exist any more in that same way. We barely get a confusing single player campaign stapled to a multiplayer game any more.

When I worked in a small town computer store circa 2003, we called this stuff "malware," and most of our customers paid us to get it off their machines. They just remade BonzaiBuddy while telling us it's good now.

“More than any other digital service, my email is a window into my brain. Now Meta has it. If that's not enough, Muse also suggested I give it my bank accounts. No thanks. I didn't let the AI run wild on my computer hard drive, either.”

I think an aspect worth examining of all of this is how much gAI use highlights that people in positions of power are often not actually doing the work but getting someone else to do it and not looking too closely at the results And from that perspective, of course gAI looks like it's revolutionary

The provost of Dartmouth, at which I teach, has been using AI to write both academic papers & national op-eds, according to brave reporting by @thedartmouth.bsky.social. Many students are already bitter about AI. This leaves us as faculty no ground to stand on. www.thedartmouth.com/article/2026...
