I don’t know if this helps or not, but Thomas Jefferson was obsessed with Mastodons. He even tasked Lewis and Clark to keep an eye out for them because he didn’t believe they were extinct. In fact, he didn’t believe in extinction and struggled to accept it.

He didn’t! He died in 1799. The first dinosaur fossil wasn’t officially described until 1824 and we didn’t even have a name for dinosaurs until 1842!
