Here is the Autumn Lane fire north of Spokane Washington yesterday afternoon, seen from the prodigious queue of cars evacuating the Indian Trail neighborhood. After we passed, it grew much larger and overran the road.

Interesting choice of cover art for Gene Wolfe's Free Live Free! The heliports and flying car are an... unexpected touch for this novel, which is _thoroughly_ set in the 1980s, in a gritty snowbound Midwestern city (probably Chicago).

The thing about “patriotic education” is that if you have to lie about America to love it then you probably don’t really love it. Ultimately their objection to the flawed universalism expressed in the declaration is the idea that the flaws were bad or that the universalism should be realized.
