The closet technological approximation I have thought of to LLMs: The Microwave! Excels in niche contexts, broadly used, but never loved. The results are universally acknowledged to be pretty crap when applied to general cooking tasks. Saves labour at the margins, but probably cost very few jobs.

Finally cracked open my student evals *groan.* It wasn't that bad, but I have seen a few comments along the lines of "HE seems to really enjoy stats/programming/math but doesn't see that others don't." I'm sorry for trying to make the topic a little less painful?

Of course I agree but were y'all there back in the day before LLMs when the algorithms couldn't even put together a coherent sentence? I fed the Book of Mormon into that thing, and reading some of those verses felt like I had my own stone in a hat.
