What powered the Moon's late-stage volcanism? 🌙🌋 Our experiments & modeling published in EPSL with Rajdeep Dasgupta show garnet in the young lunar mantle, pointing to deep fertile material by mantle overturn or prolonged mantle convection. @riceeeps.bsky.social doi.org/10.1016/j.ep...

We have a new paper. This one is about generating highly differentiated, low F melts through a series of interconnected magma chambers, each undergoing only moderate crystallization (moderate F), with the effects compounding after each successive staging. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
New work challenges the idea of a “wet” Moon🌙💧 Our GCA study, with Raj and @cintylee.bsky.social, shows water-rich lunar melt inclusions form via magmatic recharge, instead of requiring a wet mantle! The Moon may still be strongly volatile-depleted. @riceeeps.bsky.social doi.org/10.1016/j.gc...
Want to know the lunar sulfur evolution from Apollo to Chang’e-5 mantle? Check out our new GCA paper! A new sulfur content at sulfide saturation (SCSS) model is also attached that is suitable for sulfides with variable metal-sulfur ratio. doi.org/10.1016/j.gc...
Where and how the lavas in farside South Pole were generated? In this work led by Rice Uni, together with Raj Dasgupta @dianji.bsky.social @cintylee.bsky.social and collaborators, we explore the possibilities with a petrological approach 1/5 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Mantle Melting Conditions of Mare Lavas on South Pole–Aitken Basin of Lunar Farside
Remote sensing data of the South Pole–Aitken basin are utilized to estimate lunar mantle-derived primitive melt compositions Calculations of multiple saturation of primary melts with mantle miner...

Tomorrow at 8:55, waterway 5, I will talk about our recent work about at what conditions the farside mantle melted to generate the surface lavas of South Pole-Aitken basin #LPSC2025
What is the origin of the young Chang’e-5 mare basalts? -Tomorrow (Monday) at 2:50 in the #LPSC2025 Waterway 1, I'll present a joint study that reveals the presence of garnet in the young lunar mantle, as a consequence of lunar cumulate mantle overturn.
How did S inventory evolve in the lunar mantle? - Tomorrow (Friday) morning Board 3015 at #AGU24, I'll present a new model designed for lunar fO2, that can calculate the S solubility of silicate melts in equilibrium with sulfides of different metal/sulfur, and its application to the lunar mantle.
