⚽📚 The Ultimate World Cup Research Thread I've set up a little automated thread: every day of the 2026 World Cup (11 Jun–19 Jul) it shares one study on what football does to society: politics, economics, migration, health, crime & more. One paper a day. Kickoff below 👇

“Defending democracy is different than defending the status quo [..] we defend democracy best by trying to improve it and not simply by calling any critic an enemy.[..] In my view, unhappy are the lands that need an enemy to know who they are. Europe is not simply the anti-Russia and should not be.”

In today's ceremonial address at the Austrian Federal Chancellery, Ivan Krastev reflects on what it means for Europeans today to consider themselves the children of May 8th, 1945 – an appeal to remain hopeful. Read the full address: www.iwm.at/news/all-eur...

the biggest disconnect between most people and government is that they don’t feel like government is doing anything useful for them bridging this divide is as difficult as it’s ever been in the age of fractured social media, but I genuinely do not think anyone is doing it better than Zohran

🤷‍♂️ #ltwbw

An Özdemir win would matter in another sense too. 7 decades after the first "guest workers" came to the federal republic, he would be the first minister-president of a German state to have Turkish roots. It wasn't a big factor in the campaign - people just like him (⬇️) - but is a moment nonetheless.

Yesterday, the DDME Team held a workshop as part of the Freedom Week in Berlin, where participants got to design democracy on Mars! 🚀 💡 It was an inspiring experience to turn survey research into practice and watch participants discuss the pros and cons of involving different actors in the process.

Descriptive representation has comparatively limited appeal for citizens, but is more important for historically marginalised groups. Citizens do not only focus on local politicians, but also seek representation from politicians in other districts www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

“Because of the tremendous wealth of key figures…major corporations have enabled, collaborated with, and turned a blind eye to efforts to suppress, torture, falsely imprison, terrorise and murder dissenters … around the world.” Twitter [gave] the Saudi government a reach well beyond its borders.
