Not sure when/where it arose, but the perpetuation that indie books warrant no lower than 4-stars is actually damaging. This is a business; there are no participation trophies. Reading is subjective; readers owe us nothing, and they certainly don’t owe us glowing reviews for a book they didn’t enjoy
