One of the lessons of the last two years is that Labour urgently needs to stop being afraid of its own shadow. Burnham should appoint whoever he thinks would be the best Chancellor and throw his authority behind them. The Daily Mail will try to kill them anyway. So just govern.

As a British migrant living in Spain pre-Brexit, I am so grateful that my rights are protected under the WA, but it's different for EU migrants living in the UK Not only were they used as scapegoats, facing horrendous bigotry since the referendum and beyond; now they have this hanging over them

They are vile! EU nationals who fall under the Withdrawal Agreement have protections, as we British migrants in the EU do. You cant just rip that up! Farage's policy plans carry a strong risk that the EU would penalise UK nationals living in the bloc as a reciprocal measure or impose trade barriers

I’ve really enjoyed watching Farage do the media rounds today. Shifting from anger, to victimhood, to hypocrisy. Can you imagine his reaction if let’s say Zack Polanski, as a new MP, didn’t declare a £5 million ‘gift’ he’d received that year & then told the media ‘it’s none of your business’ ..

Brexit “exposed a political class that appears unable to govern, sitting atop a state no longer fit for purpose. We voted to take back control, but discovered our leaders couldn’t handle it” … and that our media was largely unwilling to call it out or hold Brexiters to account. (Sunday Times)

Ten years on, our politicians still can't be honest about Brexit. Has the 2016 vote crushed us or set us free? Neither, argues Tom Mc tague. It merely exposed our leaders’ historic reluctance to come clean about the painful trade-offs in dealing with Europe… Extracts: The voters, it seemed to me, had arrived at a set of conclusions that are, on the whole, far closer to reality than most of us in the political and pundit class usually manage. Brexit neither crushed us nor set us free. The truth about this ignominious period in our history is not that complicated, as these voters intuitively understand. In economic terms, Brexit almost certainly left us poorer than we would otherwise have been. On borders, it delivered even higher levels of immigration and — quite obviously — did nothing to stem the flow of illegal Channel crossings. And on the rest — schools, hospitals, roads, railways — it never had anything to do with our failures anyway. Had we voted Remain, then, the current fiscal pinch would be a little less sore. But we wouldn’t know, because no one lives their life by hypotheticals. And we would still be angry, because Britain’s membership of the EU was not, is not, and never has been the principal source of our ills. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that we have spent ten years trying either to take back control or to make Brexit work, but have given up. On the other side, of course, the costs of Brexit are never acknowledged, cannot be, it seems — and so we muddle on, unable to address what is in front of our noses. It took three and a half years from voting to leave the European Union before “Brexit Day” arrived on January 31, 2020. “A New Dawn For Britain”, ran the Daily Mail headline above an image of the White Cliffs of Dover. “Small Island”, replied the Guardian. Britain’s long indifference continues, and so does the dishonesty of our political class wrestling with the conundrum that will not go away.
