As always @ninametz.bsky.social is clear headed and on point! “An adaptation can be a good time and also not really in meaningful conversation with the source material.” And the discussion is part of the fun!
Adaptation vs. interpretation vs. they shoulda just made an original story from the get-go

Very cool that Starfleet has a ship named after @chanda.blacksky.app! From the Star Trek: Zero Point ashcan I picked up from @idwpublishing.com at SDCC ‘26 last weekend, written by @charliejane.bsky.social, art by Isaac Sánchez González & lettering by @longtalljodie.com.
It’s obviously by design that all science funding is tied up in military spending but it’s crazy how many scientists and engineers can be bribed into doing science for the worst people. All these employers have to do is tell them they’re so smart and special and they’ll get all the toys they want.
I wrote about how nuclear weapons are still a problem and it's a problem if the people who have the nuclear codes can't be trusted not to use them "And importantly, scientists need to understand then, who it is we make a deal with when we compromise on our values in order to get funding." ⚛️🧪🔭
So interesting to see all these writers weigh in on the morality of the review’s existence without substantively addressing what was actually most problematic about it: the failed attempt to discuss racism that was so bad that it reads as racist But, they don’t care about Black people so 🤷🏽♀️
SUSAN ORLEAN HAS JOINED THE ENEMY IN THE ODYSSEY WARS
Not only did they absolutely beg for this, they made it so that “merit” was synonymous with being white so now you’re stuck with precisely the kind of moron who believes that. www.politico.com/news/magazin...
OUT TODAY, the AAUP just released the first comprehensive account of how the Trump administration has taken the same playbook it's used on law firms & foreign governments & turned it on American universities. US higher ed has, in effect, become a target of a massive extortion racket. 🧵

“These Virginians deserve the right to use their vote, make their voices heard, and be recognized as contributing citizens to our commonwealth and country,” Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger said yesterday.

This is the only state that was banning people convicted of any felony from voting for life. Virginians have an opportunity to end that system for good in November.

OAN the liberal-moderate wing of the Dems have been getting their asses kicked and I don’t see why I should listen to anything they fucking say right now
You guys are going to have to find another way to defend Ken Martin besides inventing a political narrative about Ben Wikler that is detached from his articulated political positions and public advocacy
I personally know Ben and this is a great example of how “guilt by association” is often insufficient “analysis“ The fact that he was able to get their support doesn’t make him less progressive or Martin more progressive
of our fellow scientists have an ethics problem. They think if they design something that then gets used to kill/harm people, it's not on them. I saw this firsthand at Los Alamos. My own boss said of his work there 'if there's a hell, I'm pretty sure I'm burning in it.' Stop working for madmen ppl
I got offered millions, a lab, cutting-edge equipment, and any collaborator I wanted during Bush 2, all I had to do was develop low-frequency transmitters to go inside a soldier's helmet to affect brain activity. The plan was not to inform them. I noped out so hard, I make lotion now. But many 1/
Trump 2 has shown that the bulk of federal, state, and local "law enforcement" don't perform any useful functions at all. If they did, it would not be so easy to re-task them to brainless gestapo work like rounding up whole neighborhoods and waiting outside public buildings.
I wrote about how immigration arrests are at all-time highs, even as ICE is trying to assume a lower public profile. How are they doing this? Look to your local police.

"In a conversation led by Molly Webster, Chanda Prescod-Weinstein talks about dark matter, the nature of the universe, and who gets to ask the biggest questions in science. She challenges assumptions about objectivity and identity—making the case that who does science shapes the science we get." 🙌🏽🙌🏽

We protested for #NoNukes. We got treaties & a detente of a sort eventually. We protested for #AIDS funding & recognition. We eventually got the CDC & NIH to commit to funding & grants which almost brought an end to the epidemic. We protested for clean water, which we got, & is now ending. Its sad.

I still think about the Soviet false alarm incident in Sep 26, 1983, where we were one ordinary person's decision away from a nuclear war, only averted because he (correctly) determined his equipment was hallucinating, and having computer systems now that are described in the same fashion.

Read this immediately when it dropped into my inbox, now sending it to everyone I know in STEM — starting with my son Avi, majoring in math & physics with a minor in the philosophy of science, and increasingly saddened by fellow students still interning with companies building weapons for genocide.
