Solaris isn't a romance (imo) I wrote it for someone with the intention of using their favourite fanfic tropes (or tropes they hated!) and doing something different with them- I hope! One of those is the 'Reincarnation Romance' where love survives death. But make it a-spec...and make it iffy.

#LitHodgepodge 20 Even if it's unintentional, chances are, there are genre tropes in your WIP. Try to identify one (a good starting point can be thinking about elements that could draw comparisons to other stories). How does the trope work in your story? #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WriteSky

TUESDAY TROPES

[Graphic of an old man wanderer, with a sack on his back and a long walking stick, and a black cat]

Prompt:
20 | Tell us about a genre-specific trope in your WIP. Which trope is it, and how does it function in the story? How do you utilize, and perhaps subvert, expected patterns? Feel free to share a snip.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Tropes are essential to the conventions that define each genre. Fantasy tropes include the chosen one, inconvenient prophecies, and the quest. Romance has enemies to lovers, one bed, and fake dating. Mystery? We might see some cursed objects and creepy old houses.

(Oh God.) For Fury- She's tall, she's strong, she's anti-social and she's very, very hot 🔥 (derogatory.) As for Magpie, he'll make you feel like the most important person in the room (you might not even notice you're telling him all your secrets!)

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Today is National New Friends Day! Let's make some new friends amongst our characters! Give one sentence about your character! Then, reply to others saying who your character would befriend in their cast! #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Fury's not materialistic at all, going through the story with the clothes on her back and after Vol2, a pair of Magpie's gold earrings. The earrings actually spend more time in a pocket than in her ears and are then given back to another Callan.

MONDAYS WITH MARCEL

[Black & white picture of Marcel Proust, a man of the fin de siècle who had dark hair, sleepy eyes, and a dark mustache, sitting with his elbow propped on the back of his chair and looking pensive]

Prompt:
19 | Answer as one or each of your characters (as well as yourself, if you wish!):
What is your most treasured possession?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions popularized by French writer Marcel Proust. Victorians answered these questions in parlor games, and modern interviewers now often use them. They can also be a great character development tool!

Oops! Posted a question, fucked off to work for 8hrs with not a shred of signal. Now I'm at my other work. Sorry guys! I promise I value everything you've said and I will reply!

My question today is more for nosiness and discussion- But what do you think is your greatest flaw in your writing? And what have you done (or plan to do) to build up this skill? (I'm a big advocate of reflective practice and I think its a toolkit a lot of creatives would benefit from- its really

SUNDAY SHOUT & SHARE

[Graphic of a Victorian woman reading a book]

Prompt:
18 | Have you admired another writer’s technique and wondered how they do it? Shout them out and ask away! Or ask the community at large a general question about craft, or a specific question to help you workshop an issue in your WIP.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
This wonderful writing community enjoys the pleasure and privilege of regularly reading one another’s writing. Is there anyone here whose work you’ve appreciated and want to ask about their approach to a certain element of writing? Or do you have a writing issue you’ve been stumped by?

Living: Peter S Beagle. The Last Unicorn is one of my favourite books. I love the balance that Beagle strikes between whimsy & eerie and I'll cry every time when Molly Grue first meets The Unicorn. I would like to have some choice words with him about why follow-up story 'The Way Home' angered me.

FRIDAY FLIGHTS OF FANCY

[Graphic of a winged angel holding a book]

Prompt:
16 | You’re on the book tour of your dreams! You get to do an event with any living writer of your choice... AND any dead writer of your choice! Who are you sitting down with?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Book tour events often involve other writers, either as moderators or conversation partners. I should very much like to speak with that Edgar Allan Poe... I’ve a question or two regarding certain choices he’s made.

Join tomorrow for Saturday Snap Judgments!

Behold, today's sketchings〜 Since I really do one day want to make that Tytus animatic to Everything Black, I'll prolly be focusing on kobold stuff for the foreseeable future. I wonder if I should make this a hash tag to keep me honest. #DailySketch or something. 🤔

Two sets of kobold horns sketched in pencil

For Fury I got- 'main type uncertain' with 26% Peacemaker. That might seem odd, given that she lives up to her name. But Soillse-arc Fury especially really tries to be less full of Fury. Magpie's much more straight forward as 56% The Chameleon/Performer. Which tracks.

#LitHodgepodge 15 Personality typing systems are by nature limited but can provide a framework for self-reflection and understanding what drives your character and how they interact with the world. What's your OC’s MBTI/Enneagram type? How does it come into play? #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

THURSDAY THRIFTED THERAPY

[Graphic of an old-timey bearded man sitting and leaning his arm against a barrel with a tiny frog crawling up its side]

Prompt:
15 | Tell us your character’s Myers-Briggs or Enneagram type (yours too, if you want!). Which parts resonate most? Are there poignant ways in which we see those aspects of their personality affect the story?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Enneagram are two common personality typing systems in pop psychology. The MBTI uses 16 categories based on extraversion/introversion, sensing intuition, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The Enneagram uses 9 types based on core motivations and fears.

Very simple sketches, but this was the first time I managed to draw her lovely face without resorting to the references to build and adjust the features and all. I don't think it's perfect, but... progress! And yes, one loose-hair version because I still suck at hair, so let's practice other styles

Two sketches of Ashrah's face.

#Lithodgepodge #writingcommunity I know I have used this before, but it remains one of my very favorites with simile & metaphor.

Snippet: On Bliss
And when the others stopped at the close of
the hymn, Rushak's little finger caught a string, a note to spark a new melody, and a broad and complex theme ignited in his soul. He shifted key and time signature, setting it loose with a whoop of abandon.
Others joined, hesitant at first, then fierce as the stars. Dancers circled in smears of color and gilt. And then—when the music crested the treetops in tongues
of bright fire; when immolation brought ecstasy and drumbeats ruled his pulse; when his letra writhed, a wanton sorceress under his fingers—he recognized it
as bliss too heightened to be real.
And it ceased then to be bliss.

WEDNESDAY WORDSMITHS

[Graphic of a woman with a thoughtful expression, holding a quill, with paper on her desk in front of her and small cherub and demon figures at either side]

Prompt:
14 | Post and discuss a snip that makes good use of simile, metaphor, or personification.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Simile is a comparison of two things using “like” or “as.” Metaphor is more direct, equating one thing to another. Personification gives human qualities to non-human things. All three are examples of figurative language—words that go beyond their literal meaning to make a powerful impression.

My bad-at-feelings scoundrels are highly uneducated urchins not taken to metaphor, but they'll fall into it when dealing with a new, complicated emotion Here, Anora and Jayro shared a brief, fiery kiss right before performing a Hail Mary maneuver in the spaceship CW: drug mention #LitHodgepodge

Always Get In a Spaceship With a Scoundrel, a sci-fi romance by Ellie Rhymer:

"Jayro hadn't meant to kiss Anora back on the Helle Wanderer. There had been danger, and adrenaline, and drugs, and partial nudity involved. He'd though maybe if he satisfied his curiosity about what she kissed like, then he might be able to exert some control over his attraction to her.

But she kissed like a sunrise over a moon's ridge, like the pull of gravity around an ocean planet. Their kiss had been sure, certain. As revelatory as it felt inevitable.

That kiss hadn't gotten Anora out of his system. It had injected her directly into his veins.
