Nadia opened her mouth to answer, but a roar split the silence. Both women turned. Dozens of guards and servants hauled an enormous steel cage in the courtyard. The cage scraped across the snow covered stone. Inside the cage, a giant crouched. Giants stood the height of a two story house when upright, though giants rarely stood upright. The beast in the cage hunched, using it’s knuckles to support it. Blair had seen giants. She had even fought them as part of large hunting parties. A hunter didn’t fight a giant alone if they could help it. But this giant looked wrong. Its skin was icy pale and its face had a pallid appearance. Blair could also see a mouth full of carnivorous teeth that giants should not have. Patchy gray hair covered the giant’s chest and shoulders.

“What does she want with such a creature?” Blair asked.

“She likes breaking things, people and creatures.” Nadia said.

From Talia: Heir to the Fairy Realm. This is one of the reasons why I feel sorry for Bastile. He's trapped, but he can't get out of his own weakness to do better.

Bastile was standing by the pool. He felt the spray on his face. He tried to gather everything he saw, heard, and felt. He wanted to put it into a box so he could take it out in the weeks and months to come, when he would stand before his father and explain all that he had done. He thought about not going back: he would go to another Elen city, and start a new life, leaving the old one behind. He sat down in the grass, and reached into the water. The coolness of it grounded him. Bastile tried to fight off the darkness. There was nothing he could do — he was trapped. The only option that he had left was to go back, leave all this behind, and become the man his father wanted him to be. “You don’t have to be that man,” Talia said from behind. “I don’t think I have a choice.” “You do. Everyone does.” Talia sat down on the grass beside him. She put her arm around him. “You can break this cycle.” “They won’t let me.” Bastile was starting to cry. “I cannot escape what I’ve been born into.” “I can’t either, but we can do our best to be better.” Bastile looked at Talia. He saw love in her eyes. “This could destroy everything. Both our Realms.” “I know, but I also know I must try. Our families may stand in opposition, but we must follow our hearts.” Talia stood up.

“Time to take our leaves! Aeacus won’t be happy when he realises his precious key’s missing.”

She hurled the box as far as she could, and the three of them dashed past the now liberated road. Darkness receded, and in the distance, Ashrah spotted the ruins of a long-forgotten building floating above more and more heaps of detritus. As they stepped out of Luzvyr and into Ryllul, a furious moan echoed behind them.

Slowly, she got to her feet and made a circle around the boxes, searching for perhaps the tenth time for some sort of signal, but they were just plain brown crates, something that fruit might be shipped in. She leaned forward, placing her hands on one of the boxes as she sniffed the air. No smell. She tapped the side of the box and got nothing, then shook it a little and thought she heard something like the tinkling of glass, which brought her back to thinking it might be moonshine or some other alcohol stored in jars and bottles. But would they be this shady about sending alcohol to the troops?

Another thought that occurred to her was body parts. That wasn't something she was seriously going to entertain; there was nothing about the transport signaling it to be true. For one, she thought that the crates and the ship would have to be kept cool to store bodies correctly, and Fontaine had not mentioned anything about temperature control. And if there were body parts, being in the warm cargo hold so close to the engine would have surely caused a stench.

“Good, we will walk through the day to reach the gates of the underworld by nightfall.”

Sounded like a great time to reach the underworld, and Isyra rolled her eyes.

“I brought you something to keep you busy while we walk.” Korrin handed her a stone cube. She took it and looked up at him.

“Use your mind,” Korrin said. “To unlock the box.”

“You’re kidding?” Isyra said.

“I’m not,” Korrin said. “Have fun.”

She thought of throwing it at him as he walked off ahead of her. No further instruction than just, “Unlock it with your mind,” Isyra said, mimicking Korrin’s deep voice, and then scoffed.

He’d barely begun to wrangle his breathing when the doorknob jiggled.
“Hold up,” Owen called through the door. “It’s locked—”
The knob wrenched, the lock crumbling into so much loose hardware, and in walked the fey Owen had hit with his car.
“Oooohhhhh fffuck,” Owen said, knees giving out.
“Where is it?” said Wesley. He was almost unrecognizable in his fresh clothes and not one leaf in his hair, even with the fine line of stitches closing the gash in his cheek. But his eyes were the same: that unblinking, predatory grey. Owen swallowed, his already frayed nerves further unraveling as his eyes sought something in the cluttered storage room with which to defend himself. But if a direct hit from a vehicle travelling at forty-five miles an hour wasn’t enough to put a dent in Wesley, he wasn’t sure how much luck he’d have with a stapler or a box of pens.
“Where’s what?” Owen said,

“Fair enough,” I say as we drive into the small collection of buildings some might hesitate to call a town. Irena takes a few turns at what I assume are the only real intersections in this place— it doesn’t even seem to have any traffic lights— until we reach a building with a sign on the wall saying “Joseph’s Parcel Service”. A man is leaning on the wall just under said sign, but he stands up and walks into the open garage door next to him the moment we enter his field of view. Irena pulls into the small parking lit in front of this door, and the man comes strolling out pulling a dolly with a large box on it before the engine even fully dies. I now see that he has short cut brown hair with grey streaks around the temples and blue eyes surrounded by wrinkles. He’s probably around fifty, if I have to guess.
Irena steps out and flashes the man a big smile before speaking. “Joe! You always see me coming, don’t you?”
“Kinda hard to not spot you in that, miss,” Joe replies with a smile as he comes to a stop right behind Seahorse. Irena opens the tailgate for him, and I’m assuming this box is what we came here for, the Journals she talked about.

Ashley joined her, sitting close enough their thighs touched. He didn’t have a blanket, but his body didn't quiver like a terrified mouse. Perhaps it wasn’t that cold, and she was so far gone, she couldn’t control her limbs anymore. He threw his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close, letting her head rest against his shoulder. It was uncomfortable, but she didn’t move. At least the discomfort reminded her that she was still there.

That the world was real, and she was in it.

An argument broke out eventually, when the silence became aggressive. Some wanted to leave. Anna said they could. She would call someone to take them back to the city. They wanted their money back. Anna consoled them, saying she would see what she could do, though Will knew the contract they’d all signed said it was too late for that. They all needed to go back to their rooms for now, and she would make sure everyone got some dry clothing, a hot beverage, and something sweet to eat. Some of them didn’t want to go back to their rooms, and she talked them down, too. One or two asked if a spirit had done it. The spirit that had attacked Will. Will tensed, and Ashley pulled her closer to him, tucking her blanket around her like a cocoon. Anna told them it was a heart attack.

She never mentioned Abraham.

Jacob came in at one point, soaked to the bone and carrying rain gear for the entire group in a large box that looked far too heavy for his skinny limbs to lift. He’d volunteered to help the staff, Will remembered, the thought bubbling up through the morass of shock and numb disbelief. Not everyone had the luxury of doing nothing, taking up space like an overgrown house plant. Will curled further into Ashley. She just wanted to go to bed.

On sunny days, they brought out the solar oven, a glass covered box lined with black pitch– evergreen sap mixed with herbivore feces, sanitized through heat. Sheets of shiny metal reflected light to the absorbent dark areas, heating up the box.

His pants would be around here somewhere. Probably something to take the edge off this hangover, too. That cheerful thought in mind, he pushed himself upright.
“Looking for these?”
His pants hit him in the face before he could see anyone, but he didn’t need to anyway. “What are you doing here, Fox?” He ducked under the blanket to dress.
“You seemed so comfortable, thought I’d join you.”
He tossed off the tablecloth and looked up. Fox was sitting cross-legged on a stack of boxes.
“How long have you been here?” he asked.
She shrugged. “A couple of hours. Hard to say.”
“Why?”
“It’s peaceful. No one around but you, and you weren’t in a talkative mood. I needed some time to think.”
“That explains so little.”
“I was looking for you. You weren’t with the proprietor of the establishment. Figured you were still here. I decided to wait.”
“Ok, that makes…more sense,” he decided to let her answer at her own pace. “How are you feeling?”
He stared at her expectantly. She needed to talk to him about something, but she obviously wasn’t keen on spitting it out.

Lyndina had moved a trio of Keledrath youths
from the large room they occupied and placed them in Rush's, to make room for a larger family in the sector. With another bed placed between Rush's bed and
Drisal's, there was still room for the Keledraths and their clothing and shoes once the BOXes of scrolls had been lifted off the floor and stacked on the desk.
Cerel, having finished showing Thanilas around, was trying to wipe an ink smudge off his hand when Drisal burst in, demanding an explanation.

"We're solving a space problem for Lyn,"
Cerel said. "Since Rush isn't using his room."

"That's an assumption. It isn't true! He—“

Cerel grimaced. "Stop blustering. Not in front
of Than." Thanilas smiled shyly, lifting a hand, and Cerel shoved Drisal out the door. "Now what's wrong?

carry, but there was a limb of leafy branches torn from a felled tree. He grabbed that and whirled about to see Mistle beset by another Cedhrun, larger and stronger. Not be useless, not be useless—He dashed
toward her screaming, the limb with its branches extended in front of him. The mass took the Cedhrun in the face and its axe scythed down between him and Mistle, missing them both. As it staggered backward, Mistle swept its legs out from under it with her spear shaft. Rushak grabbed the axe and hurled it back
through the trees. Their eyes met. Mistle's face was scratched, her arm bleeding, but she was flushed with exhilaration. She was also endangered by fatigue.

No such THRILL inflamed Rushak's blood; his
pulse thundered, wild with fear. He glanced at their toppled foe, which was still struggling with the branches in its face. Then he glared at her. "Come on!" he said through his teeth, tilting his head toward the looming Forest trees. "You are very talented, but we can help better from up there."

MAGUIRE DESCENDED into the expansive bowl of the corrie, icy droplets stinging his exposed flesh. A torrent of rainwater soon cascaded off his garments, spattering to the ground, where it laced between myriad stones and transformed the downhill trail into a slippery, racing runnel.
By the time he’d made his way back down to the animals, his face was astream with moisture. The sodden shepherds leapt at him as if he’d been gone a hundred years. But for them and life’s rare flickers of lightness, his losses weighed heavy as a wet cloak.
He squatted to wait out the rain.
When the downpour eased, an unseen curlew’s weird and lovely cry mocked him.
Would spring never come? Not one trill of the greening—yet shorebirds in the uplands.
They’d driven livestock to these meadows in summers past, constructing bóthans, willow-framed shelters of rush and heather, where they swapped ghost stories under the stars and laughed by the crackle of bonfires.
Here—high above Ravenscliff—where Conall Maguire had succumbed to the febrility of first love.
Thirteen years had now passed since the Saint John’s Eve fires had worked their sorcery, their flickering glow chasing away Lifford’s torturous specters, clearing Maguire’s mind of all but the scent of clean wool and a young woman. Crushed white woodbine thrilled his nostrils as the moon rode high over the hills, casting a silvery glow on the highlands. While other young shepherds passed liquor in the firelight, Caitlín Gilmartin joined Conall in his makeshift shelter, where inexperience proved his sole constraint.
Conall had craved the distraction—the intoxication, the obsession, the ecstasy—and he surrendered to it, a fledgling eagle primed for flight. Caitlín’s long, dark hair spilled free. The fire of nature summoned him to imperatives of the flesh as her scent drew him to her lips, her neck, the warmth of her breasts. As if fever-crazed, he capitulated to the temptations of her geometry.

A soft breeze soughed over the ridge that night, caressing the highland grasses as pagan flames danced shadows over Caitlín’s contours.
An unreckoned child came next.
Conall pushed his sins from his mind, tightened the donkey’s cinch, and ignored the hollow ache that time refused to heal. He’d overcome nothing but a few steep hills.
On he trudged.

Vashad moved his fork along his plate, toying with the potatoes as his father spoke. He’d made it back home without trouble, but explaining the situation brought him no joy. Jakari was the perfect father and so of course he blamed himself for his son’s circumstances. Vashad’s mother held her husband and stroked the nape of his neck. “I became complacent... prideful. My son is so very intelligent that I knew you would escape the conscription.” Jakari gaze moved up from his plate and onto Vashad a painful smile on his face. “It would have been a story we laughed about together. My boy, giving those soldiers the slip.”

“There’s nothing that could have been done. That old knight, Golm, was far more prepared than any of us. Short of running off, I would have never been safe... and who is to say if that would have worked.”

“Wouldn’t have been the first time,” Milubel spoke, tightening her grip on Jakari’s hand. “Your father and I... We chased off from the city when I was pregnant with you. Escaping that life was the best decision we ever made. Together we found our place here in Tanninide and made a beautiful family.”

The man was sobbing now, his whole body shuddering with the weight of his terror. They knew no greater fear than what they felt in their final moments, knowing his face would be the last one they saw.

“Kill us then,” he said. He didn't even try to get up, didn't even try to fight anymore. It was mildly disappointing. “Get it over with. I'm sure you've got more important things to deal with.”

Dimitri's lips curled into a small smile. “I won’t have to kill you. You’re going to kill yourselves.”

“Wh –” the man started to ask, but the vines silenced him, constricting around his head, his shoulders, his torso, his limbs and pinning him to the ground. His cries were muffled, his eyes wide and glassy with a fresh wave of tears. It sent a thrill rushing through Dimitri’s veins as he pushed his way into the man’s mind, gliding past his recent memories and searching through the darkest recesses to find his greatest fears, his deepest regrets.

When the stress of it got too much, one thing ALWAYS cleared her head.
SKYFALLING!
Tinkerbell took another deep breath and flew high. Her wings beating as hard as they could. They kept pushing her further and further into the sky. The clouds were so close! She was going to make it this time! Her back ached! The air was getting thinner now! The burning in her lungs spread across her body!
Just…a little….futher!
Tinkerbell closed her eyes and stopped. She fought back on the instinct to beat her wings again, instead just letting her body fall. The wind roared in her ears, its strong gusts blowing through her golden hair. Everything was spiraling when she opened her eyes. In a quick motion, her wings stopped her descent before crashing into the treetops, and she dived forward!

A flood of water invades my mouth and nose in a sudden flood, and I splutter and cough back into consciousness in a panicked rush. I sit upright but feel a multitude of hands hold me stable on the back and shoulders, and moments pass before I’m able to clearly take in my surroundings. Those surroundings are occupied by my students standing around me in a circle, looking down on my sitting ass with far more concern than I deserve.
“What the- what happened? Everyone okay?” I ask, gaining me some confused looks.
“Yeah, we’re fine, are you okay?” Christine asks, clearly baffled. I look at her, then set my mind to searching around my body for any sensory evidence of injury. Aside from soreness that I assume is from the fall, I don’t think I’ve been bitten by any of the snakes, although I’m unsure as to what that’d feel like.

“We have a Reno Sweeney morning!” Emma greeted Beren as she came down the stairs the next day, still smelling of lavender and honey wine, head pounding. They’d had three bottles of the stuff between them, taking it in turns to pour for one another and riding the high of their magic until the moon left the sky and the stars blurred. “So you know we did well.”

“Wonderful. I’m thrilled for all of you.” Beren groaned. She didn’t drink much these days, so the occasions she actually gave in and had too much, she always got the worst of it. “I feel like crap warmed over, so if it could be a coffee morning, I’d feel like that’s a success.” She rubbed her eyes, trying to dredge up some charitable feelings for her friends and failing entirely. “At least Alex is opening the shop for me today. I don’t trust myself to do anything for a while.”

Emma put a mug off coffee—light and sweet—in front of Beren on the table, followed by a couple of tablets and a small glass of something green. “Phoebe said to drink this with the painkiller and you’ll be right as rain in half an hour. And you know Phoebe’s never wrong about these things.”

Beren waved Emma away and breathed in the scent of liquid ambrosia, letting the steam take her on a journey toward the land of the living. She wanted to dunk her face into it, but the cup wasn’t wide enough—and a hospital visit didn’t appeal—so she contented herself with taking a few, life-affirming sips and sighing with contentment. “Perfection.”
