I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

"The Publisher may not use artificial intelligence in any manner in relation to this Work, including to reproduce, translate, narrate and/or produce art for the Work without the Proprietor’s express permission, nor does the Publisher have the right to sublicense others to use artificial intelligence in any manner to reproduce, translate, narrate, and/or produce art for the Work without the Proprietor’s express permission. Furthermore, the Publisher will not use cover or interior artwork generated by artificial intelligence.

"In addition, the Proprietor expressly prohibits the Publisher from using the Work in any manner for purposes of training artificial intelligence technologies to generate text, including without limitation, technologies that are capable of generating works in the same style or genre as the Work. The Proprietor reserves all rights to license uses of the Work for generative artificial intelligence training and development of machine learning language models. The Publisher will use best efforts to include a limitation in any sublicense of the Work prohibiting the use of the Work for training and developing generative artificial intelligence technologies."

There are a lot of opinions about what makes you a real writer, so let me tell you the truth: You become a real writer when you notice a typo and it's too late to do anything about it.

Yes, authors are at risk of randomly rejecting actual humans who want us to be on their podcasts who send us scammy-sounding proposals. ...oh, wait. This is not a risk.

I'm so upset not to be at FantasyCon because the complete nuisance I would have made of myself, Peter F Hamilton wouldn't go anywhere all weekend without me heckling and booing. I would absolutely use the power of autism to give zero fucks if I'm upsetting him.

Re-posting this because from all the "yay Canada, this is good" responses, I see I didn't strongly enough stress the main point I meant to make, which is that well-intentioned efforts like this that rely solely on the honor system are essentially meaningless

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

Google AI summaries are not to be trusted. Case in point: all actual references on the web to "Daughter, Dreamer, Slayer" point to my forthcoming novel. And yet the AI summaries related to searches on that title have been confidently and completely wrong for days.

Screencap of Google's AI claiming my novel is a Buffy tagline.Google's AI claiming my forthcoming adult horror book is actually a YA novel from a different author.

Now I've heard there is a secret chant An author sings to increase her chance But you don't really care for novels, do ya? It summons fiends from the dark abyss who somehow smell of lepidobotrys The baffled editor sings Hallelujah Hallelujah ....

In case it was unclear, suggesting that anyone with a disability needs gen AI to do amazing art is, in and of itself, incredibly ableist. Do not spit on those who have found innumerable ways of making art without stealing from others and polluting the planet. It is disgusting to suggest as much.
