here's some more of chapter 17 of oh my days for wip wednesday. chapter 14 is coming soonish!

"Can we, uh, talk outside, maybe?" he asked, ignoring the urge to reach for Stede's elbow, to give it a little stroke. Stede's body language made it quite clear that anything to that effect would be most unwelcome, and Ed couldn't even begin to blame him.

Stede didn't answer, just did a sort of annoyingly flamboyant "after you" gesture, and followed Ed outside, both of them retrieving their coats and putting them on on the way out and back into the cold, where the neighborhood was still bright and alive despite the chill and the time of night. Ed dug a cigarette out of his pocket and stuck it between his lips before offering one to Stede, who silently accepted and pulled out his lighter (although Ed couldn't help but notice that he made a point of lighting his own cigarette first, which wouldn't have been noteworthy if he'd been anyone else).

"Well?" Stede asked, an arm crossed over his chest as he smoked with more aggression than Ed had ever seen from him before. "Care to tell me why you didn't deign to tell me you were leaving?"

Ed had always kind of liked Stede's bitchy streak, but he was quickly learning that it didn't apply when it was directed at him, even if he did deserve it.

"I didn't know I was," Ed replied, then corrected, "I mean, I didn't really plan it like that."
