Olruggio scratches the back of his neck, something worried and reserved having come into his expression, though he’s still smiling. “, it’s just…Can I ask why a beast reminds you of me?” Olruggio’s thoughts are in boxes next to his words. ‘I hope it’s not about Noz…Qifrey doesn’t usually like the gossip around h-“
Qifrey’s words interrupt those thoughts. “It’s a liongoat.” He still looks embarrassed with his answer, though honest. “Because you love cheese so much.”
This shocks Olly to stillness, a blank smile on his face with little cartoon cheeses around his head. ‘Eh?’
His face takes on a look of confusion.
“Where did you hear that..? I mean I do /like/ cheese…”
Qifrey looks even more flustered now. “WHAT?! Isn’t it your favorite food?!”
“Well, I wouldn’t go that far…”
Qifrey becomes irritated now. “ALL MONTH YOU’VE BEEN SAYING YOU CAN’T WAIT TO EAT A WHOLE /CAKE/ OF CHEESE!!”

Olly looks incredibly perplexed, repating back Qifrey’s words in his head. ‘Cheese…cake? Ah-“ It dawns on him, and he throws his head back to laugh loudly.
“You got me there!!” he throws an arm around a still grumpy Qifrey who asks “Why are you laughing?”
“Thanks, Qifrey. This is a great gift.”
“Don’t hang on me.”
“Thanks for puttin’ so much thought into it.”
Qifrey gives Olly a somewhat flat stare, though the color on his cheeks and ear as he turns is telling. “Don’t count on it happening again.”

Olly slaps Qifrey hard on the back, causing him to double over as he nearly drops his hat.
“Too bad! Happens once a year! C’mon! I’ll letcha try that ‘cheese’ cake I’ve been talkin’ about!”
They both begin to run off together.
“Ew…I don’t think I want any.”
Olly is smiling back at Qifrey as he responds. “It’s sweet! And totally melt in your mouth creamy! The tart berries go really well with the fluffy cake!”
“Cheese and berries in a cake?!”
“Just trust me!”
“Fine.”
The scene fades out.

Olruggio’s eye, drawn in his current day age, is closed as (presumably) Qifrey’s voice calls out gently. “Olly, Olruggio-“
Olly grunts softly as there a few knocks on the door.
Olruggio wakes, hunched over his desk with an assortment of papers and clutter. He’s drooling on his hand with dark circles under his eyes. “Are you awake?” Qifrey’s voice continues to call. “Sorry to wake you but, the girls have something they’d really like to show you.”
Olly lifts his head, rubbing it groggily, making his bedhead worse.
“Olly?”
“Yeah,” Olly responds quickly this time, standing to answer the door. “Yeah, I’m comin’.”
The scene shifts to show the space above his desk, and in the center of the shelf, the liongoat carving is displayed.

A black and white comic. The first panels shows a pair of hands holding an unidentifiable wooden animal or sorts. The second panel depicts a child Olruggio staring down at it curiously.

It pans to a child Qifrey, fully red and steaming as Olly asks “Um, it’s cool just, what is it…?”
Qifrey grabs at it, but Olruggio grabs him by the collar to hold him back, holding the figurine up where he can’t reach. “Woah, woah!! you can’t just take it back!!”
Olly holds it defensively after letting Qifrey go, looking flustered as he says “You gave me this ‘cuz it’s my birthday, right?? It’s rude to take back a gift!! I just wanna know what it is!”
Qifrey shoves his face.

“I thought the seal would have made it obvious,” Qifrey grumbles, looking off to the side. Olruggio is quickly holding the figurine up to inspect further, then noticing a tiny seal etched on the belly. “Oh! A rainflinger spell..? OH!” He is suddenly sparkling with excitement. “A contraption! Is this your first one??”
A blushing Qifrey groans and turns his head away, looking overwhelmed.

“Sorry if it’s not something you like. Everyone had such weird advice on gift giving.” Qifrey looks frustrated as he looks down at the floor. ‘Just show them you’re thinking of them. Something you make is best. Relate it to their interests. But those are all just feelingss…and the rainflinger spell is the only one I’m good at right now, so-“
Qifrey glances to Olruggio, then balks as he sees him squinting with what looks like disappointment on his face at the figurine. “WHY ARE YOU STARING AT IT LIKE THAT. It’s so clear you don’t like it!!”

A monochrome comic depicting Qifrey standing in front of a washbarrel, holding Olly’s shirt. The room is very still and holds a somber feeling about it as Qifrey looks at the shirt in the light coming from the window.

With only the sound of fabric shifting, Qifrey pulls the sleeves of the shirt over his shoulders one by one, then slides it to bunch around his face with a slow breath. You can see the sleeves of the shirt draped over his back like an embrace, light filtering through the ends

Olly is seen some time later, pulling his freshly washed and folded shirt from the basket. As he holds it up, a pale leaf flutters out, catching his eye as he watches it fall to the floor.

‘Huh’ the text at the top of the page says, with the leaf centered on the floor, sun from the window illuminating it. ‘how’d this get here?’

I’m pretty emotionally beat today. Just trying to once again take in the onslaught of authoritarianism and fascism this country is experiencing. The only reprieve I am offering is some images of queer people comforting each other. I hope it helps someone today.
